Wiretap: Pistons Not Sold on Jackson

Post#1 » by princeofpalace » Tue Jun 23, 2015 7:45 pm

This is from today's wiretap

The Detroit Pistons would have interest in Emmanuel Mudiay if he falls to them at No. 8.

The Pistons traded for Reggie Jackson at the deadline, but he'll be a restricted free agent.

"They're not 100 percent sold on Reggie," a league source said.

The Pistons also like Justise Winslow and Mario Hezonja at No. 8.

Detroit is not 100% committed to RJ, if Mudiay falls it looks like he may be a Piston. Its not surprising to me since Pistons arent in a place where anyone should be untouchable and if we do end up drafting Mudiay we could use Jackson in a S&T.

I still hope Mudiay doesn't fall to 8 because Id much rather have Winslow or Booker but its an interesting scenario .

It could be smoke but also with some basis in fact too. Mudiay would be a cheap asset on a super bargain contract compared to what Reggie is going to command. Plus, this is Stan's rebuild or retool so there'd be patience for that too.

I don't mind Mudiay at all if we move Jackson.I wanted him when the draft buzz first started and before we got RJ.

No one, on any team is untouchable. The closest we have, in order, are Drummond, Jackson, KCP.

I also don't think Mudiay falls to us, as it would take a very special set of circumstances, and with the recent WCS rumors, if he's not picked above us, it's a virtual certainty that he's picked above us.

This is as close to a non story as you can get, concerning the Pistons.

In a vacuum, I'd rather have Mudiay + asset on Jackson S&T + $14 mil in cap room than Johnson + Jackson on a max. Play Jennings as the starting PG to spike his trade value before the deadline while Mudiay gets accustomed to the league, then hand the reigns over in February.

Nothing more than a convo starter and smokescreen...nothing to see here.

Seems like something we would say to make sure we got offers if he fell to us. Who knows though? All smoke screens this week.

That's probably the most likely thing going on here. I'm not going to read too much into something that goes against the grain of pretty much everything we've heard. Especially a small tidbit coming from Ken Berger.

If a team signs Jackson to a big offer and we've drafted Mudiay, how much leverage do we have in a sign and trade? They could offer something minor and dare us to match the contract. If we did match, how long would it be before we could flip Reggie and what could we get for him on a big deal?

I'd be really surprised to see Mudiay at 8 and you damn near have to take him on value. Winslow would almost certainly be gone. I'm just not so sure what kind of asset we can squeeze from a Jackson sign & trade.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

A "league source" said? lol. SVG has been a pretty darn straight shooter since arriving in Detroit.

The one thing SVG hasn't been is irrationally attached to players. If Mudiay drops into his lap, it would be in his best interest to at least explore the idea of running a rookie PG and foregoing paying RJ the salary he will command.

If we got Mudiay, we just let RJ go.

As well as hitting the reset button at point guard when the team's goal is pretty blatantly to win as soon as possible. Even if Detroit drafts Mudiay there's a very small chance at best that they let Jackson walk. It's not happening.

I don't know if I call it a reset. Jennings and Dinwiddie are still around. But is RJ a good enough shooter? Seems like he struggled a bit when we had him.

A 2nd round back up PG and a career streaky chucker coming off a serious injury...yea i'll pass and keep Jackson seeing as he has the best chemistry of any of them with Dre and Co.

It's a reset when you're replacing the starting point guard. Jennings isn't going to be useful for at least a year and Dinwiddie is a solid backup at best (and I think he will look much better next season even further removed from his ACL injury). I don't know if Jackson will ever be an above average shooter but if he plays like he did during the last few weeks of the season that's good enough to win with. And for what it's worth Mudiay's shot is even worse than Jackson's.

Jackson learned our system and can throw a lob to Andre.

Like someone else said, Mudiay's shot isn't any better. I want a SF or Booker in this draft.

If Mudiay falls however, can't see us passing based on potential and value. Not because we aren't "sold" on Jackson.

Realgm also says we're zeroing in on Stanley Johnson, possibly even over Winslow.

My god that would be awful....
