Kelly Oubre
Never heard of him. nbadraft.net:
NBA Comparison: Kendall Gill/James Young
Strengths: Standing 6’7’’ and possessing a 7’2’’ wingspan, when you think of prototypical size for an NBA wing, Kelly Oubre’s proportions are right in line with what teams are hoping to find ... This length, paired with his top notch athletic ability allow him to do some very special things on both sides of the ball ... Defensively, he’s really made strides during his freshman season at Kansas ... Using his long arms, and quick reflexes, Oubre’s very tough to get past ... Only averaging 20.4 mpg, Kelly racks up 1.1 steals and .4 blocks per game, and during Big 12 play, where he’s stepped up his game, he’s inflated those stats to 1.4 spg and .6 bpg ... He is also a very good defensive rebounder for a wing (10 rpg per 40 minutes) ... Oubre is aggressive on the glass, and does a great job weaving his way deep under the basket, and using his length and hops to catch opponents by surprise ... From an offensive standpoint, Oubre’s strengths are his outside shot, and ability to break out for transition hoops ... Kelly is shooting .37% from long range, and has a smooth left handed jumper ... His athleticism is also key for him performing well on the break ... Mid-range game as real potential, as he’s already hitting 41% on 2 point jumpers ... He’s also shown some potential getting into the lane and hitting floaters, and a solid, but not striking ball handling foundation ... He’s also responded very well to tough coaching by Bill Self ... Oubre has risen to the challenge of being pushed, and as a result, he’s seen his playing time and production skyrocket since the beginning of the year ...
Weaknesses: Kelly is a thin guy, and although around 200 pounds, he could stand to gain some strength ... He’s not really a player who needs to bulk up considerably, but physical maturation, and strength gains will vastly help him in the NBA ... Oubre’s shot can appear flat at times, especially when driving ... When he’s playing at the next level, his in the lane floater is a shot blocker’s dream ... Some more finesse and touch on his shots in the lane will certainly help his cause ... Sometimes he can have lapses in focus, and as a result, pick up questionable fouls on defense ... A player with very good defensive potential, he still needs to continue to stay keyed in on that side of the ball ...
Overall: Oubre’s prototypical size, athletic ability and two way potential give him a lot of appeal to teams picking in the lottery this season ... He’s shown more flashes defensively this season, but certainly has the tools to be a very effective offensive wing in the NBA ... Kelly has a very good overall foundation, and has shown the ability to improve and respond positively to coaching ... This speaks very well for his development, as he is currently a player with great potential, but not necessarily the NBA ready tag ...
Notes: Measured 6'6.5 (with shoes) 204 lbs with a 7'2 wingspan and 8'8 standing reach at the 2014 Nike Hoop Summit ... Measured 6'7 (in shoes) 199 lbs, with a 7'1.5 wingspan at the 2014 Kevin Durant Skills Academy ... Measured 6'7 (with shoes) 190 lbs with a 7'1 wingspan at the 2013 Kevin Durant Skills Academy ...

Re: Kelly Oubre
I didn't expect the pick but its interesting. I can't be too mad cause I like the aggressiveness and he was the 2nd best player left on my board. He's a Trevpr Ariza ish type of player but seems to have a a better shooting stroke. He'll be an immediate kiIler in transition whether filling the lane or trailing the break and stepping into a 3.
Good pick overall. He fits the EG mold in that he's a bit raw in terms of IQ but I think his energy/activity offsets some of that. He should stick in the league and be a solid role player to potential quality starter if he keeps his head on straight.

Re: Kelly Oubre
Decent prospect with some upside. Okay shooter, but nothing special. Not good from 2pt range. Okay from the FT line. Really good rebounder. Good defender. Young. Not a bad pick-up, though trading up to get him seems an odd move.

The Wizards needed another small forward as much as they needed.... a 12 year Ernie Grunfeld tenure.

Re: Kelly Oubre
I thought he'd go 10th to heat but then Winston fell to them. I like him. actually he's the first player I'd looked at initially. footage of him playing against Stanley Johnson.
I think he has upside. I'm a fan of these klay sized wings. He can be a swing wing. A big body to have against bigger twos. an extra body to throw at LeBron so we can switch on him. And eventually a bus ticket out for rasual and martell even though I love them both.
I think we got a good player and kd likes him too

Re: Kelly Oubre
Well, we knew Ernie hates 2nd round picks and, unlike queridiculo, I think wing is a position where we are thin with Pierce presumably leaving and Webster looking physically done. Hopefully his shooting is good enough and his handles improve enough to where he can back up the 2 as well to become a 6th man -- or Ernie may be looking at this year's playoffs and thinking Otto is a stretch 4 who can play a small ball lineup with Oubre.

nah we needed a wing as well. martell and rasual need to go and behind Beal and porter who's not completely proven there's no one there we can trust.
pierce might cine back but he's more stretch four and I find his D suspect

Re: Kelly Oubre
Was it really that we wanted Oubre or was it that we wanted to make sure we didn't have future 2nd round picks? :)
It doesn't feel right with Portis there for us, but with Paul's departure we get an athletic replacement. If we get a dropper big in the 2nd this could be a good draft. Still "feel" bad that we didn't take Portis.
