Tobias Harris To Pursue Near Max Deal With Pistons, Celtics Among Leading Sui...

Post#21 » by ComboGuardCity » Fri Jun 26, 2015 6:08 pm

Max deal today is 12mill in the future. I think Jennings is included in this deal to ensure Orlando doesn't match.

Not to mention the changing salary cap. In 2 years the MLE is expected to be in the $8 mil + range. A solid starter salary is likely starting at the $10-12 mil range. Harris would no doubt be a starter and a key member of our core, if we need a slight overpay to make it happen I can live with it.

^For that reason though is why I think Orlando grits their teeth and matches. They could trade him in January with his okay, or come the off-season - teams don't give up assets for free.

He really, really improved his shot and was often the only capable 3 pt shooter on the floor for the Magic.

One year does not make a shooter, I just don't trust him really.

Would you trust Draymond Green as a shooter?

There is about a .01% chance you guys don't get matched. A max is simply not enough based on what he stands to earn (14 mill range) and what we have offered (11 mill). It isn't enough of a difference to lose out on an asset. I can see us matching him just to use him in a trade if anything. A 22 year old with his skill set and versatility is a hot commodity.

Our GM has said numerous times that he doesn't expect Tobias to be going anywhere and they want to resign him. But crazier things have happened. He is a great young talent, and with the cap rising you guys would have a great deal on him in a 2 years. He can easily be a 20ppg guy.

Something to note with Tobias, since I'm all on board that train.

He's no Josh Smith level terrible, like at all. He's improved every year and advanced analytics are also very favorable on him too IIRC. So having said that, he can't be worse than the Josh Smith and the 13+ mil experiment that we had here.

Playing him at the 4 which I think is more his natural position, will make him suited for us since he can stretch and loves to slash with ball handling. He can't guard 3s to save his life, but he should hold his own better against chasing slower 4s especially since if post ups aren't frequent. I'd be more comfortable going after Tobias than Draymond Green.

Signing him to an offer sheet is the first hurdle.

Second hurdle is negotiating with Magic. We could offer them Jennings and a pick to NOT match it - and I would.

Yeah, I'll certainly buy that we're interested.

Not sure I'll buy the notion that we can outcompete other potential suitors AND have the Magic not match. The odds of these things seem relatively long. Teams will probably be going harder after Harris because they think he's the only one even remotely possible not to be matched in contrast to Butler, Leonard, Green, and even our own Jackson.

Yeah, one of those RFA that's going to be very hard to get. Nice player, but ...

Vince Ellis saying Pistons are prioritizing D.Green and Carroll, don't want to tie money up for 3 days for Harris.

That makes me even more happy if true because I would love any of those 3 to be our starting small forward.

From the minimal times I've got to see T. Harris, I like what I see but it still leaves a few questions. Maybe someone that's seen/followed him more could help me understand his situation better.

1. Is his injury history something to worry about or just bad luck? He's never played 70 games in any season.

2. Are his numbers the product of his use rate on a bad team or can his skills easily translate to a winning team?

3. Given his age and skills, shouldn't we be worried if Orlando doesn't match? Especially with the cap going up, how can Orlando afford to lose an asset without compensation during their rebuild?

He'd be a great addition, but I'm just waiting til something is signed before i get too excited. There's too many rumors/bs flying around nowadays.

Disclaimer: I'm a pretty big Harris fan.

1. I don't know how relevant his injury history is. He was benched in Mil, and played as soon as he got to Orlando. Played the 13-14 season with a nagging high ankle sprain (which I believe hindered his 3 pt%) and last year I don't think he did anything to jeopardize himself being on a losing team in a contract year. I would say it is more about bad luck and timing.

2. I think his numbers are his numbers. I think he's an example of a player who doesn't really benefit from being on a bad team. His PER36 numbers have been surprisingly consistent (back to college) as well as most of his FG percentages. He's not a player who was ever just given the ball and a green light. Playing with ball dominant SG's who are poor shooters does not help him much at all either

3. Orlando fans seem pretty ready to let him walk. He's not valued as much as some of they younger talent. I think they prefer the allure of what players could turn into and aren't looking to pay him near max.

I don't buy Vince Ellis, but I'm not sure I buy him less than this source.

These are all players I have an easy time believing we'd be interested in though.

This is exactly what I wanted, if we signed johnson. We now have 2 lock down defenders, in stanley, and pope, drummond patrolling the paint, so we need a guy who can play 3/4 depending on matchups, and can, at time switch with stanley to guard the smaller fours (stanley).

This would be a coup, and if we just outright sign him, and give up no players, our bench would be insane.

WHEN JOHNSON STARTS AT THE 3.

Reggie
Pope
Johnson
Harris
Drummond

BENCH

Jennings
Meeks
???
Erson/Tolliver
Anthony/Erson

That gives our bench flexability, that most teams wish they had in the starting lineup.

I hope this pans out, because our 4 doesn't need to be a badass defender, he needs to be able to do everything, and Harris does that.

I don't want harris for what we'll have to pay him, even though he could be a good player. he has chronic ankle problems and has dealt with injuries literally every year of his career.

2012: 42 games (64% of the season)
2013: 55 games (67% of the season)
2014: 61 games (74% of the season)
2015: 68 games (83% of the season)

he's played in 72% of the possible regular season games in his career.

to sink considerable money into a player that is so injury-prone is pretty risky, imo.
