He is an expiring and the right trade would be a win-win-win for both teams and Hibbert.

Re: Hibbert is opting In
I have no idea what we will do in 2016 when he's a free agent. the cap will be going way up so a new contract in the range of his current contract will be no where near the max. who was that player that signed the big contract in Atlanta years ago that they called John Contract? John Contact was it? anyway, in the first years it looked like a huge overpay but soon it was just normal as everyone's contracts escalated. resigning Roy next year at his current level could be reasonable if he rises to the challenges Bird has put before him.
obviously, I don't see us trading him. why sell low? I do see us shopping Ian to open PT for Turner although you need three guys who can play the 5 and it is questionable whether we'd have that without both Ian and Roy.

I disagree, the Roy Hibbert fire sale is on. He's an expiring and I think that makes him movable. Something is better than nothing so I see the Pacers as very motivated.

an expiring contract has value to us too. I don't see the rush to trade him if all we're doing is dumping salary. we can do that nearer the trading deadline if we aren't contending. do we really want to take on a longer contract of similar dollars just to get rid of him? he's been his own worst enemy but has he been a bad locker room influence?

Everything will depend on how he is playing, what our more uptempo style ends up looking like, and what we get offered for him.

I don't think expiring contracts are worth much unless you have young assets to pair with them. The move as I see it is Roy for a more worthless expiring contract and some kind of value. Granted there would have to be enough value to a deal to be equal to the cap space next year. I think there is value to test driving a marginal young asset and think there is probably more value to that than the toothpaste back in the tube exercise of trying to resuscitate Roy in Indy. As to the locker room thing, are we sure he isn't a distraction when he goes into one of his funks?

Re: Hibbert is opting In
in the past an expiring big contract could get you a better player on a much longer big contract from a team that needed to get younger. of course, better player can be in the eyes of the beholder. we'll have to see how much value expiring contracts have this year because with the cap going way up, teams may not be as concerned as they used to be about generating cap room the next summer.

I think Smart is a tough competitive guy, big time defender too. Any reason he ultimately couldn't be a more athletic version of Rodney Stuckey or a Lance Stephensson with a brain?

Boston fan here, we're not trading Smart for Hibbert.. I think Wallace/sweetener could work.. We have the cap space to absorb Hibbert's salary outright, so if you were willing to give up a first-rounder that seems like a possibility.. But Smart, no way.. He's only come up in rumors for Cousins and Nerlens Noel..

Smart did come up in rumors for the #11 before the draft, also.
But no. We're not giving up a 1st to dump Hibbert. And if you're moving Wallace for useful expiring like Hibbert, you have to give up a 1st just to cover for Wallace, and then you have to match value afterwards for Hibbert...nothing amazing, but still, more value.

What are you expecting to get for him? It sounds like Bird is always trying to trade him, doesn't want to pay him, has even said the team is changing its style this season, and that Roy may play less.. So you want Boston to give up the sixth pick in last year's draft for a defensive specialist who doesn't score or rebound? Wallace and a 1st more than "matches value" for the Pacers because it saves you 5 million..
If I were Bird, I'd try to find a free agent loser willing to take his money.. Maybe Milwaukee, if they strike out on all the centers.. Hibbert for Henson. Or to Portland for Leonard or Plumlee..
