Uh oh, Embiid suffers setback per Woj
After reading what you guys were saying about Hinkie's press conference, I figured that it must have been pretty bad. I finally watched it and I don't understand what was so bad about it.
Was it just hearing him say it that made it real? We already knew everything that he said other than the fact that Embiid won't play in the summer league, which we assumed already.
The Sixers are concerned about him, as they should be. I seriously hope that he doesn't need more surgery, but even if he does, it simply is what it is. A second surgery doesn't mean that he is doomed. It would just mean that he was going to miss more time, and that his foot is still in a precarious state.
Now that we have Okafor we have another potential franchise center that will pair with Noel well.
I feel a lot better having Okafor on this team than I would have felt with Russell because I think he is a better prospect, AND he is awesome Embiid insurance.
Embiid is still our best hope, but he is no longer our only hope.

If Embiid needs another surgery, id be very very worried.
The kid just started playing Basketball how long ago? These are prime development years for a player, especially one who's still learning the game.
Add in 2 extremely serious surgeries to the same foot, and 2 + years away from playing Basketball.... Id we very worried, and am not sure many players, yet alone kids could come back and be a franchise cornerstone after all that.
Hopefully this doesn't happen, but like you said, I am very happy that we have Okafor in the fold to build around.

Whenever you have to seek the opinion of specialists all over the globe it is never good 9 times out of 10.
In sports "2nd opinion" is usually the most dreaded phrase in terms of injury-related issues.

Yea, if several doctors said "Joel you'll be fine pal".... your not scouring the globe for orthopedic specialists and surgeons for more opinions. Add in the fact that Hinkie himself said "Surgery isn't off the Table" and were looking into every option has to throw up a red flag imo.

However, the sixers said last year that he was seeing multiple specialists to form a consensus. That was the process they used as they created his first rehabilitation program, so to see that they are seeking a variety of opinions from multiple specialists is not surprising. It wasn't one surgeon calling the shots up to last month.
Obviously it isn't a clear cut solution or they would have already determined a course of action. I think when specialists have differing opinions, you need to keep soliciting opinions from the best specialists available until you are comfortable with the course of action.

That could very well be the case, but usually a consensus opinion is formed to see if you can avoid surgery, since being cut is always the last resort. Usually they try to see if any doctors will recommend no surgery. But if they see 2 or 3 doctors and they all say "he's fine, let it rest, it'll heal in time" then I don't see why they'd need to keep seeing doctors about that.

Yeah, Hinkie's vauge recap was strange. The doctor's were baffled by what they saw in the scan or something.

I'm no expert on any of this stuff, but I wonder what "something strange" could be in a CT scan. I'm wondering if it's spider cracks. If so, that would not be good at all. I remember his stress fracture being a very clean break, and the surgeon said it would heal cleanly. If it worsened, then that is not good. Especially for that bone.
Just reading the tea leaves, I'm thinking he needs another operation, but again, I have no idea.

It just sucks the Sixers wasted the #3 pick on someone who might have to have his second consecutive foot surgery. I'm not arguing for or against the pick, but just in general.
At least we have Okafor now.

At this point I'm not even factoring in Embiid anymore. I can't worry about something that's out of our control. Having Okafor in the fold makes me appreciate the pick more.

You are obviously arguing against it if you consider drafting him a waste.

I'm interested in what the sports science guy, David Martin, opinion is on Embiid? The fear mongering is going to be at an all time high right now, for good reason, so I cant wait to hear what they say what his status actually is.

I feel like Hinkie has had every opportunity to calm the nerves of Sixers fans lately and he seems to be shying away from doing so.
Which leads me to believe it's bad.
He's careful in what he says , but he hasn't really given any indication that we shouldt be seriously concerned

Just like everything else during his tenure, he's keeping expectations low. Imagine the backlash if he said Embiid is probably going to be okay but it turns out a disaster?

Re: Uh oh, Embiid suffers setback per Woj
I don't think Embiid will ever be a franchise player you build around. I think that foot will be a problem for the rest of his career. But, I do believe he can be a key player(all star/third banana) in a championship environment. Just with less minutes but playing KEY minutes. Resting a game or two here and there. I think this is the only way to save Embiid for the rest of his career. Hopefully he will acknowledge it and accepts that role.

He isn't a doctor, and it would be completely irresponsible for him to draw conclusions and communicate them before the doctors have all chimed in.
He could say if he is optimistic or not, but he is a cautious dude.
If he has been told that he needs more surgery, then to would be stupid to say that before all of the doctors have agreed, or at least been given a chance to examine him.
If he has been told that he doesn't need surgery, then the same thing applies.
Granted, he didn't exude confidence, but I don't really know what that means for Joel.
It is bad news wether he needs more surgery or not, and we should all be very worried.
At least all of our eggs aren't in one basket anymore.
We have 2 players that are potential superstars now instead of just one.
