Apparently you did not remember this too well. The Lakers couldn't 4 peat with Malone and Payton because the Lakers lost to the Spurs in the WCSF in 6 games in 2003 before they signed to play with the team. Then lost in the finals against Detroit in 2004.


The summer we got Malone and Payton was the summer the spurts beat us.


Exactly. After the 3 peat, the Lakers lost to the Spurs. Signed Malone and Payton for the following season, and eventually lost to Detroit in the Finals. Therefore a 4 peat could not even be possible with Malone and Payton had they won against Detroit.
