Just an idea of how the knicks can proceed this offseason.
Correct me if I am wrong but the Knicks have roughly 27-28 million in cap space this summer after the THJ trade.
1.) BACKCOURT-
I think one of our main priorities should be looking to sign Monta Ellis. He is 29 years old opting out of a deal that would pay him 8.5 million. If we target him and lock him up to a deal of 4 years 40-44 million, that is great value from a player of his caliber. He would fit in well as a second option to Melo. Also, a two-guard lineup with him and Grant would work as Grant has the height and defensive capabilities to defend the 2 position.
2.) FRONTCOURT-
Assuming none of the top tier free agents come to NY (Gasol, LMA, Love); We are left looking at a trade for David Lee, of signing the likes of Monroe and/or West. Another name I think we should look at is Koufos on the cheap.
I feel alot of what we do with the frontcourt will be tied to our ability to trade Calderon (7.5 million) for additional cap space. After signing Ellis it will leave roughly 17 million in cap space remaining. With Calderon trade, it would leave us with 24 million; which could be enough to sign Monroe to a max and also add West. Monroe (4 years 60 million) West (2 years 20 million)
PG: Galloway, Grant
SG: Ellis, Ledo
SF: Melo, Early, Anthentikoupo(sp?)
PF: West, Porzingis
C: Monroe, (back up defensive big), (maybe Bargnani)
Thoughts?
