That was savage, but it might not be the most brutal KO of the weekend.

Fluke flying heel hook?

Hm, not that I'm aware of. Although probably more likely than the ones I mentioned.

The heel hook point is really interesting though. The flying stuff would not happen to anyone very good but leg locks don't require the passing of the guard whereas most other submissions do.

He wasn't back then, but it's such a tough move to pull off and being a guy that's from Brazil and fighting at that level, that should never have happened.

I don't disagree with you, but I guess I don't really see how that goes against my point.

It doesn't, just that it's possible to land fluky submissions. Fluky strikes happen and this could be a case of that.

Well I was speaking of high level submission guys but honestly if we can point to one example across 5 million fights then that may just be the exception that proves the rule. :)

Schilling is out of the bellator/k-1 event due to medical suspension.

Ken Shamrock: Instead of using technique, I tried to choke him to death & overdid it

In an excellent interview with Bleacher Report's Jonathan Snowden, the eldest man signed to a major promotion sets the record straight about what really went down in that Bellator cage. Here's what he had to say on the record-setting fight:

"I was a rookie. It was like my first fight. I got into a position to win and I didn't take my time. I forced it," Shamrock said. "I was stronger than him, I manhandled him and I felt in complete control of that fight. But, when I got his back, instead of trying to use my technique and slide the choke in, I tried to choke him to death. I tried to use all my strength and power to muscle it in. Because I felt so much stronger and so much more dominant than him. And I overdid it, man. That's the bottom line. It was a rookie move. I had him dead to rights and I screwed up. I tried to force it instead of just letting it work. It got to a point I was squeezing it so hard that I turned it over and ended up sliding off his back.

"In training, I didn't work on finishing at all, other than some leg locks one day. I mostly worked on conditioning, movement on the ground and positioning," he continued. "I thought it was like riding a bike. When you do it you just do it. I worked on getting the position, on taking the back. But never on finishing, on applying the move until the guy tapped out. I just worked until I had it and then let go. And I think that's where the mistake was made. In training I never actually made anybody tap out. It was all catch and release."

Luke Thomas said shamrock hadn't trained ground in "years" before this fight. Not sure if he was actually serious about that bare knuckle thing or what.

Bellator 141 is out. Atrocious main event in 2015 w/ Melvin Guillard vs. Brandon Girtz. Overall it's a pretty bad card, but there are actually a couple better lw fights than the main event.

Saad Awad vs. Patricky Freire is the co-main. They're going to swing for the fences. Awad could be an interesting challenger in a trilogy with Brooks if he wins (when is the Held match going to happen?).

Then Derek Anderson vs. Brent Primus is on the prelims is a battle between two fighters of promise. Primus is a powerhouse, aggressive grappler. Derek Anderson a pretty slick, well-rounded guy, but who prefers to kickbox. So a poor man's Cowboy.

LW around the world folks. Trying to carry cards action-wise in a variety of organizations.

In the least surprising move of the month, Josh Thomson signs with bellator:
“I’m over here reading this UFC reporter saying that they’ve declined to re-sign me when the truth of the matter is that they’ve been trying to re-sign me for my last two fights. I declined and instead chose to fight out my contract and test the free agency market with Bellator,” Thomson said. “At that point, Bellator made me an offer that the UFC was unable to match given their relationships with Fox and Reebok. It’s a done deal; I’m back working with Coker, and I couldn’t be more excited to get back to an organization that is trending upwards with fighter-friendly contracts. Any intelligent fighter is going to go where the money is, and for me the money was at Bellator.”

Even though it won't effect the guys who really move the meter, we are definitely seeing second tier guys willing to jump ship from the UFC to Bellator over this Reebok stuff. None of these moves will hurt too much, but the UFC has to be careful not to end up with a death from 1000 paper cuts here. Pushing your middle class out into Bellator's welcome arms is not a good strategy.

You know I am usually more than happy to slam the ridiculous reebok deal. That said, I'm not sure if I would read too far into it this time. Josh Thomson is an AKA guy, and Coker has some weird relationship with that camp. I want to say they are all managed by the same guy who is BFFs with Coker or something. Its why Cormier was in strikeforce, Thomson, Kos went back to bellator, Mike Kyle in strikeforce, Cain was in strikeforce, the list goes on and on. Was bellator under Coker when Fitch was cut? I'm guessing not or he would be there too. Your point stands though.

Bellator is actually not too bad at LW.
