McGowan just misses 2nd no-hitter in Jays history

Dustin McGowan's bid for the second no-hitter in Blue Jays history ended when Jeff Baker singled leading off the ninth inning, and Toronto beat the Colorado Rockies 5-0 Sunday to complete a three-game sweep.

McGowan lost his chance at the majors' third no-hitter this season when Baker lined an 0-1 pitch up the middle for a base hit. The Rogers Centre crowd then saluted McGowan with a standing ovation.

McGowan (3-3) retired the next three batters to finish his first career shutout. He struck out seven and walked one while throwing 109 pitches.

Dave Stieb tossed the only no-hitter for the Blue Jays on Sept. 2, 1990, at Cleveland. Mark Buehrle of the Chicago White Sox and Detroit's Justin Verlander have thrown no-hitters this season.

Frank Thomas hit his 499th career homer and Vernon Wells added a three-run drive for the Blue Jays (37-37), who got back to .500 for the first time since they were 13-13 on May 1.

The 25-year-old McGowan, a first-round pick in the 2000 draft, retired the first 10 batters he faced. Kaz Matsui drew a four-pitch walk with one out in the fourth and stole second, but McGowan struck out Matt Holliday and got Todd Helton to ground out.

McGowan was hit hard in his previous start, allowing six runs and eight hits in just 1 2/3 innings against the Dodgers, his shortest start of the season.

Thomas led off the fourth with his 12th home run. It was the second in two days for Thomas, who is one homer shy of becoming the 21st player to hit 500. He struck out in his last two at-bats and finished 1-for-4.

Aaron Hill doubled home a run in the sixth.

The Rockies, who are 0-6 in Toronto, were swept for the first time this season.

Josh Fogg (3-6) allowed five runs and seven hits over six innings, walking two and striking out four. He lost for the first time since May 17 against Arizona, a span of five starts.

This one was a little sweeter than the TB comeback for one reason.

The Jays were tied and had a chance to win it in the BOT 9th. They don't. Accardo throws a cookie for a homer run and the Jays pick him up against one of the BEST closers in the game.....at least statistically.

Go Jays Go.....

BTW.....we won and Towers was on the mound

i was just as pissed as Glaus when Accardo served the home run up.

But luckily they got the win. The catcher was stupid to make that throw with the game on the line but oh well.

Let's hope they can sweep the Rockies and get back to .500 :clap:

Wow. Giving up 2 in the top of the 10th is usually a moral breaker, talk about guts coming back to score 3 in the bottom.

Overall, I enjoted listening and watching the ball game today. Nice to see Frank get 4 hits and also, to those who think V-Dub is slumping, take a peek at Andruw Jones......now hitting 7th for teh Braves.....he's averaging .199.

The offense is finally starting to wake up (Thomas in particular), but now Towers and Taubenheim are going to start 40% of the team's games until AJ and Chacin get back, so the Jays continue to have very poor timing. It's just one of those years where nothing clicks. The pitching will now regress while the offense wakes up. Can't seem to get both clicking together.

The next 14 games will be huge. One more against Colorado, then 13 straight games against teams the Jays are looking up at in the Wild Card standings (Twins, M's, A's, and Indians). I think the playoffs are beyond a pipe dream at this point, but playing meaningful games in August and September for a change would be nice. Hopefully they go on some type of run soon to get back to respectability. Try to finish the year with more wins than last year, at the very least.

The only thing i didn't like about the CBC broadcast was the colour tone of the picture. It was too cool. I had to change the colour setting on my tv to a warmer preset and then it finally looked like how it should.

Other than that, the commentating was great! Felt so good to listen to someone other than jamie campbell or rod black.
