Trade exceptions are now pointless. You don't get trade exceptions AND cap space. Your cap space IS a trade exception to the other team.

They are redunant to the $27m in cap space the Knicks have and serve no purpose.

they expire the 1st, we can use one on a better/cheaper player if possible and "save" money in the process

How do you "save" money? They count against the cap.

I never believe anyone is signing with us until the ink is on the contract.

say we wanna sign a 3andD 2 Guard we can use the 5.9M trade exception prior to free agency for a guy who can give us the same productivity over a guy we gotta give 10M. So we have 4.1M extra to go after from court depth. It's an option I'm sure Phil is looking into.

I don't think you understand what I'm trying to explain to you. If you trade for a $5.9m player Tuesday at his 2014-2015 salary, on Wednesday his 2015-16 salary counts against the cap.

So you can just trade for him Wednesday using salary cap space and sending his team a NEW trade exception.

I'm not arguing you should acquire a $6m player instead of a $10m, I'm explaining to you now that the draft is over the existing trade exceptions are useless, because as of Wed they'll be $27m worth of cap space you can use to create a trade exception of any size (up to $27m) you want.

Okay then, what 3 & D player who is as good as Green who is making less than $7m and who's current team not longer wants him despite being as good as Green and making less than $7m would you suggesting trading for?

If we sign him, West, and Monroe; our team becomes very potent offensively.

STARTING LINEUP

(C)Monroe-- a guy who can create within the triangle as a big who can post up and find the open man. (15/10 guy)

(F)West-- a guy who can provide the interior toughness our team needs. We can play him at center when we play 'small ball' as the Warriors did in spurts with Draymond Green. (8/8 guy)

(F)Melo-- our primary scorer. Franchise player. I see him coming back strong this year. (26 points / 8 rebounds / 4 assists)

(G)Ellis-- a guy who will provide a much needed secondary scorer for the Knicks team. Will take a lot of the scoring burden off Melo and I think he will fit well. He was able to do well in the Dallas system last year and was an active passer prior to the Rondo arrival. (17 points/ 6 assists)

(G)Calderon-- Steady hand at the point guard position. Will run 2 guard lineup with Ellis and share bringing up the ball. Can stretch the floor with his 3 point shot. I look for him to play well as a second year player in the triangle. (10 points / 5 assists)

BENCH

Emeka Okafor; Caron Butler; Jerian Grant; Kristaps Porginis; Thanis Antethekoumpo; Langston Galloway; Ricky Ledo; Louis Amundson; Cleanthony Early, 1 more big/veteran to round out the linup (maybe Bargs if he will play on a min contract)

Rotation
C: Monroe(30)/ West(10)/ Okafor(8)/ Amundson
PF: West(22)/ Melo(12)/ Porginis(14)
SF: Melo(28)/Butler(12)/ Porginis(8)/ Early
SG: Ellis(35)/ Butler(13)/Ledo
PG: Calderon(25)/ Grant(13)/ Galloway(10)

How do we afford West, Monroe, AND Ellis?

Monroe will command $15 mill max contract/year
Ellis will command $11-12 mill contract/year
West will command $6 mill contract/year if we give him a 3-4 year contract (im hoping)

That's a total of $33-34 million. We have roughly $27-28 million in cap room after the THJ trade I believe.
Once we go over the cap we should be able to use our trade exception. We can use our 5.9 million exception to sign West. Can someone verify this?

No.

A trade exception counts against the cap their use is when you're OVER the cap. In order to create cap space, you have to renounce your trade exceptions.

You don't get cap space AND trade exceptions.

Thanks for the clarity. So we have room for one max player($15 mill) and one players around ($11-12 million). If we do get a 3rd player it will depend on our ability to trade Jose Calderon.

I hope so. He would be a terrible signing at anything north of a one year deal for $5 million.

I feel like this situation is very similar to the Mets and Michael Cuddyer. Cuddy turned down a 1 year, $15.3 million qualifying offer from the Rockies to sign a 2 year, $21 million deal with the Mets.

West declined his $12.5 million player option and the Knicks will probably give him a 2 year deal for $18-20 million. Would be a terrible, terrible signing.

I didn't mind him when he was at Philly and he's young too. What price range would he be?

Also, giving Danny Green, DeMarre Carroll, or Wes Matthews something like $10+ million per year would be a big mistake. If you're going to spend that money on a shooting guard or small forward tier 2 free agent, spend it on Ellis or Wade, legit #2 options.

West would be a nice veteran to have to teach our young guys the ropes, but I agree that seems like something we should be able to obtain that for a much lower price tag.

Amen. I agree with Green and Carroll. If Matthews comes back well from injury he might be worth it.

We need a secondary scorer. He can't rely on just Melo. He have Calderon and now Porzingis to stretch the floor for us.

In that case; opinions on Brandon Bass? He is a solid player. I believe he is a free agent? Can anyone confirm?

Indeed he is. I like him as well, nice consolation prize if we don't hit it big in free agency.

Yeah, I'd take Matthews over Green and Carroll, but the injury scares me a bit.

And I like Green. I'd be happy if we signed him. Just not for $10 million.
