Butler wants to be a Laker

Bulls forward Jimmy Butler, who is a restricted free agent, is interested in signing a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Lakers, according to the Los Angeles Daily News' Mark Medina. Unfortunately for Butler, the league's salary cap rules won't allow him to do so.

Theoretically, signing a one-year deal would be a good decision for the 24-year-old Butler to make. He'd be able to re-enter the free agency market in a year and take advantage of all that new TV money set to enter the league. Butler's wariness of the Bulls has been reported; Yahoo Sports! Adrian Wojnarowski noted that Butler was interested in pursuing a short-term deal with the Bulls so he could become an unrestricted free agent.

Signing with a team like the Lakers would also allow Butler to split with Derrick Rose. The two reportedly have a cold relationship.

"A league source again acknowledged that one of the issues that has left Butler willing to play hardball with the Bulls in his push to hit the free-agent market sooner than later was because he's turned off with the idea that it's "Derrick Rose's team," wrote the Chicago Sun Times on Friday.

Fastest way for that to happen is for Butler to sign his one year qualifying offer and sign with the lakers next summer as an unrestricted free agent.

If Butler chooses to take QO, CHI may have to trade him in season to avoid losing him for nothing next off season.

It's probably important to note that if Butler signs a one year qualifying offer, he'd have a no trade clause for next yr. Also, any team that he agrees to be traded to won't get his bird rights, so they'd be bidding for him with cap space anyway without the advantage of offering an extra year or bigger raises.

He already did when he turned down the long term deal last year that was worth half of what he's worth now. If he takes a 1 year deal, his max would grow exponentially next year that's why even with the Lakers, he's looking for a 1 year deal and nothing more. So its very possible that he ends up taking that 1 year deal unless the Bulls are willing to give him a 2 year deal at max to try to smoothen everything out. Butler knows that he will make a lot more in a few years. If the Bulls offer a max short term, that may be a sign of goodwill.

He was probably hoping the threat of leaving in a year would make them not extend a QO... They did, now we'll see what he does.

It'd be better for us if we could get him this year for sure. Who knows what happens between now and then.

If they don't extend a QO he becomes an unrestricted free agent, so not sure how he could scare them into not extending it.

I didn't say it would work... I don't understand it either. But the only other option is them not matching a short term offer from us, which to me, makes even less sense.

Well that would be the logical move, but Bulls won't get nearly anything of value. The team accepting him in a trade will pull " we want assurance that you'll resign" from Butler. If teams know he's going to walk away, it makes it harder for the Bulls, especially if Butler is dead set on coming here.

Yeah you can't...totally for got about that. That's what made the Monroe situation in Detroit so awkward. The Bulls situation would really be that considering the rumors of Butler and Rose throwing shade to each other. Butler should just sign that QO like Monroe did and control his own destiny next July.
