Makes sense. I get trying to get him on a court but summer league is pointless at the best of times.

Yep, Flip was on the radio last night. He spoke as though Nemanja is definitely signing, they just can't officially sign a deal until the 10th. Hoped he could come practice with them in Vegas, and maybe play a game or two, but he isn't optimistic about that, as Bjelica has National team duties to attend to so there are scheduling issues. He implied he has just KG, Bjelica, and Hummel to sign, and that's it for free agency.

Man when Nemanja officially signs I'll be so stoked - I really have to pinch myself to make sure I'm not dreaming when I look at this roster and all the potential and see where we were just a few short years ago. I think Bjelica can be a very valuable player for us and fits very well amongst the current players and team we are trying to build.

I'm excited and eager for the season to start from an individual standpoint, but I'm not sold in the competitiveness of the roster if all we get to add this summer is 3 rookies to what's already one of the youngest teams in the league.

Where was Flip talking about this?

I'm pumped about the opt out. Come on over Nemanja!

That's fine with me. Although, I don't understand Hummel. It would seem there's a logjam at PF/C.

KG, Bjelica, Towns, Hummel, Dieng, Bennett, Payne.

Another point — the versatility of the roster will be amazing. Going to be interesting to see how Flip works on rotations and player fits next to each other.

With the contracts being thrown around, if we actually get Bjelica at $3-5 million per year, it'll be a steal even if he's only a 15-20 minutes bench guy. Raps giving Carroll $15m a year, wow.

KG won't play a lot of minutes, Bennett will be shopped, and Hummel is more of a 3 / 4.

It should only be an issue if the frontcourt stays healthy and plays at a high level - good problem to have. Hummel seems like a minimum salary guy; if he's playing at all and it's not a blowout, then there's been a problem with injury or someone sucking.

I didn't necessarily mean for minutes. I meant roster-wise.

Rubio/Jones
Martin/LaVine
Wiggins/Bazz/Budinger/Hummel
KG/Bjelica/Payne/Bennett
Towns/Pekovic/Dieng

Is that what it's going to be for the 15-man roster? Like I said, a lot of bodies in the frontcourt positions. Side note: I'd like to bring back Neal but I guess that's not going to happen.

I wish we could just dump Payne, Bennett, and Hummel

LoBro can stay.

I wonder if FA spending will make Bjelica's price go up. Flip is quoted saying he's a rotation player in a top 10 pick. Sounds like that's worth more than $4M/year in this market.

who else can sign him though? His options are 4 mil from the Timberwolves and try to play well so he can get 1 decent NBA contract, or stay in Europe forever.

He's been more complimentary of Bjelica lately, which makes me think a deal is somewhat in place. Before the draft when he was reportedly trying to deal him to move up he was calling Nemanja a 15-20 minute a night guy. Now he's calling him a top 12 pick.
"A while back,'' Cardinal said, "I took a picture of the standings and texted it to Love, just to bust his chops,'' Cardinal said. "He sent me a picture back of a snowdrift.''

I'm mostly sold; I think they would have been competitive last year if they were healthy. Now they've upgraded the interior defense immensely, got a true point at the backup 1, and the young core is a year older and hopefully wiser.

If they aren't competitive, I'd imagine it's because of injuries as usual.

The other option might be to just push for shorter term...higher risk, less guaranteed money...but if he is confident in succeeding, he gets his big pay day quicker.

Slick negotiation tactics?
Them: "we want 8 mil a year"
Flip: "he's basically like Robbie Hummel, no big loss"
Them: "ok 4 mil"
Flip: "well...ok"
Then Flip hangs up the phone and does that evil villain laugh thing that increases in intensity as it goes along.

He should definitely want a player option if possible. He probably has 1 big NBA contract left in him at his age.
