Grizzlies sign Brandan Wright

Post#1 » by I Am Awesome-O » Wed Jul 1, 2015 11:21 pm

Free-agent forward Brandan Wright has agreed to a three-year, nearly $18 million contract with the Memphis Grizzlies, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

The Grizzlies used their full midlevel exception to sign him.

Wright, 27, split last season between the Dallas Mavericks, Boston Celtics and Phoenix Suns. He averaged seven points and 4.9 rebounds in 40 games for the Suns.

At 6-foot-10, Wright gives the Grizzlies a long, athletic forward who should be an upgrade over Kosta Koufos. Wright delivers another frontline weapon with a lineup that includes Zach Randolph and the likely return of All-Star center Marc Gasol.

Wright is from Nashville, Tenn., and was the eighth overall pick of the 2007 NBA draft out of North Carolina.

Been dying for the Grizzlies to get Wright. That deal is an inarguable steal.

Seeing as wright can play the 4 and the 5 , I'm sure we are definitely looking for a trade for green because he is only useful to us really at the 4 since he doesn't space the floor a lot and we have Matt Barnes now, so I would look for Memphis to try to ship him and perhaps even clee or carter out for a shooting upgrade on the wing , but this signing albeit still having limited shooting doesn't make it imperative that we have to make a trade, but there is one on the horizon I don't doubt, Marc Gasol wants a contending team before he resigns and that is exactly what FO has done this offseason and done a good fine job of it pulling upgrades out of no where with nothing

I doubt they will get rid of Carter now, especially since they signed Wright considering how well they meshed together in Dallas.

solid move, liked bismack too but i thought Wright would get more than MLE after seeing other deals, a complete steal if health is on his side. 1st FA i've been pumped for in awhile .......maybe since TA ? small deals with beno, stokes or kk,nick s&t's would be great , i'd rather try to keep KK but that's a long shot but so was wright for MLE ....

I like the deal. Wright was one of the players I didn't mind coming to the Grizzlies. He should be of good help playing both PF and C positions.

Vince gets his lob partner back from the Mavs days. They had great chemistry together.

Problem is Wright works well in a fast paced offense or high pick & roll where he can get easy lob dunks. He also has an underrated midrange jumper. His main problem is he cannot really play the 5 as he gets bullied on defense and gets abused on the boards. Grizzlies even with the Gasol / Randolph frontcourt too many times last year got bullied on the glass and opposing teams getting 2nd/3rd chances on their offense. He can block shots though. Still a good pickup IF the Grizzlies open up their offense to allow the strengths of the guys on their team to flourish instead of the stagnant/predictable offense they ran last year.

That's one of the concerns I have with Wright that his style of play matches well in an up-tempo system rather than a half-court style. It would behoove the Grizzlies to create some schemes to benefit the players on the team who best fit the quicker system than the half-court system like Zordor mentioned a few weeks ago.

If you guys are still getting Mo Williams, your second unit offense will be great. The trio of Harris, Carter, and Wright was the Mavs' most effective unit in 2013-14. Carter was actually playing awful until Harris and Wright recovered from injury and joined the team... I could see him bouncing back this season if he can play as part of a fast-paced group like that.

Solid deal for you guys. He's cheaper than Koufos and he'll be just as productive.
