Excellent post.
I love what Hinkie's doing. I wish we had started doing it ourselves many years ago. Especially 7 years ago, when Hammond was hired.
Another thing people are making a mistake on when it comes to what Hinkie is doing with the Sixers is that I've seen numerous people say/write that this is basically the only tool in Hinkie's toolbox. That's a poor assumption. A better assumption would be that he will continue with Phase 1 until it has yielded enough results to move onto Phase 2. Once Hinkie finds a young core that pans out, surrounded by young supporting players he will have the flexibility to at least enable him to go after the kind of impact veteran star or stars to try to push the team into contender status. And in the meantime he will have banked enough money, maintained enough salary cap flexibility, and accumulated enough young assets and draft picks to assist him in that endeavor.
For now, I love what he is doing in Phase 1, and I am envious.
If we had executed that type of plan properly in year 1 of Hammond, we might have had 2+ years of a conference finals or championship contending team by now, which certainly would have helped with the new arena campaign.
