I think I'd take Kosta on a cheaper deal over signing Lopez to a monster deal.

Monroe isn't risky at all. You are risking next season not working. If it is a disaster we can easily trade him for peanuts if we had to with the cap going up. Someone would absorb his salary, and most likely give us something in return.

Strange how Marc Gasol's name hasn't been mentioned at all over the last 72 hours.

No idea how reliable this is..
@NotoriousOHM: Now hearing Greg Monroe could decide who he will sign with later this afternoon.

Their 'big splash' so far has been MCW.
I never gave them credit, I'm talking about where are positionally. It's far different than where we were at any point previously, that's why the "Kohl offseason" posts are dumb. I mean, every objective NBA media person has us as a top 4 core in the league. There is a reason for that, it's because we have a top 4 core in the league.

I think that's because he only met with Memphis and is considered pretty much a lock to resign there.

Meh, We had 8 of those guys? I think we drafted 3 of those, which means we got good value for them in a bad draft. Martin was signed under the new area. And a couple others were min FAs. I would say 90% of teams had at least 8 of these at some point considering they were mostly journey men.

That wasn't BS, they just didn't expect us to go from 15 wins to 41 as quick as we did.
Exactly. And abandoning your plan because you made the playoffs is stupid.
What do you suggest they do? We won 41 games playing our core players majority of the minutes minus Jabari because he got hurt. We were the second youngest team in the league last year. We also just drafted the second youngest player in the draft I believe. In the East we are going to continue to make the playoffs whether we go out and sign someone or not, the East is that bad and our young core is that good. If you can add a good center in free agency while we have a lot of cap space in comparison to other teams why wouldn't you?
I'm with you on the Vasquez trade because I thought it was dumb for many reasons but as long as our core players get most of the playing time and we continue to win I don't know how you can get upset with that.

That's what I was saying last night.
That said, if Monroe would come here for 4/$68 there still is some value in it, and I call it the Mark Cuban strategy. Back in the day, he knew he could run a large payroll over the cap and that if he took gambles on semi-valuable guys like LaFrentz, Jamison, Dampier, etc with big contracts and it didn't work out, he'd still have a valuable salary slot to keep as an asset.
The strategy allowed his team to effectively run a payroll about 20% over the cap but yet still be able to bring and test drive those guys via those salary slots in future trades. He did a lot of roster tinkering but he got the Finals in 2006 and won the title in 2011 using that strategy.
Now obviously that strategy may later entail a luxury tax that LED might not be willing pay, but I can take the gamble on Monroe under the guise that the new massive salary cap means unfortunately we are paying someone that money. Monroe isn't my first choice, but he's a worthy one.

Would the Bucks resign Henson if he takes a huge step next season and try to trade Monroe?

Re: Free Agency Thread -Woj Bomb: Inroads with Monroe!
Last offseason I might not have wanted to max Monroe.
But after watching Kidd create a great defensive team with ZaZa starting, it is no stretch that he could do the same with Monroe. Picking up MCW makes it that much easier for us as well.
Jabari's ACL tear also makes me badly want another scorer so that we aren't overly reliant on him during his recovery year too.
Monroe, Parker and Giannis are all such good passers that they all would get plenty of shots either way.

LUKE23 wrote:So is that Sac first next season for Philly? If it is, they probably have five firsts. They already have LAL (1-3 protection), MIA (1-10 protection), OKC (1-15 protection), and their own. That, and they, to me, have a sick frontcourt moving forward in Okafor/Noel, perfect pairing. They are set up well if they draft well.
Only problem is that all those hoarded 1sts are almost certain to be in the 20-30 range. The only one that offers much upside is of course the Lakers top 3 protected 1st, but we'll see what they do in FA now that they've lost out on LMA.
Okafor is pretty much their franchise player by default now. I don't think Noel and him can play together unless he's coming off the bench. Nerlens offers pretty much zero offensive game and the experiment of playing him at PF last year was a disaster. I think he gets moved for a decent asset.

Lakers 1st will be high unless they get Aldridge or Gasol. The other guys available aren't moving the needle, and they likely start basically two rookies (Russell and Randle) and Kobe is beyond done as a player. That team will stink barring a miracle.
Okafor/Noel will play together. Noel is the stud defender you want next to Okafor, but without much offensive game. If Okafor gets even decent range that's a hell of a pair to have to deal with.

The Cavs had a team option for this year at 4.95mil that they picked up.
Oh.
I thought he had a Player Option and he opted out for some reason. Never mind.

But go back a month and tell me youd wanna max out Greg Monroe. Pretty sure you'd get eaten alive on this board. Now that it may happen it's "ZOMG! Greg Monroe!!!! What a great move!!!!" Go back a month and tell me you'd give up that Clippers first, our second and a chunk of our cap space for Vasquez. Pretty sure you'd be laughed at and called a troll. Now the narrative is, "that pick won't be worth much, and Vazques is a really good fit." Hell even just before the draft, tell people we should pass on Portis for Vaughn and youd be boo'd off the internet. This board can be so two faced its funny.
Well, to me, you have to look at the core. I think there are risks with Monroe, but at what point under Kohl was our entire starting five and over half our bench rotation 25 and younger, with two guys who likely see multiple all-star games? I mean, you have to compare what we already have, not just the moves made this offseason. Some are acting like we are adding these players to Jennings/Ellis.
Is MCW/Middleton/Parker/Giannis/Monroe perfect? No. Is it one of the top 3-4 young cores in the league? Easily, without debate.
Well to be fair we acquired Giannis while Kohl was still in charge... and the new owners bought the team when the number 2 pick was already secured. So I wouldn't exactly give them credit for adding those guys. Even Middleton was already on the team when they purchased it.

If he signs here, we need to demand that he give up on the comb-over and shave his head. Should be in his contract.

Kidd did such a great job coaching the team last season. What a phenomenal move by the new owners to get him.

Re: Free Agency Thread -Woj Bomb: Inroads with Monroe!
Monroe isn't a complete player but who is that we can get? He might not stretch the floor but what center can do that and rebound that we can get?
I trust that we can teach defense. I don't trust that we can teach post offense and rebounding. I'd be very happy with Monroe.
I found this from an article:
"Last year, Monroe’s 21.2 player efficiency rating was higher than that of Klay Thompson (20.8), DeAndre Jordan (21.0), Damian Lillard (20.7) and Paul Millsap (20.0), per Basketball-Reference.com. He gobbled up about a quarter of every available defensive rebound when on the court, posting a higher rate than Anthony Davis and Draymond Green."
