Harris is a flawed player, of course. He doesn’t pass and he has been lazy on defense for most of his career. But he perked up a bit on that end last season — contract-year alert! — and he’s good enough off the dribble to create easy passing lanes. Dude is 22, he can post up smaller guys and blow by bigger defenders off the bounce, and he hit 36 percent of his 3s last season while switching between both forward positions. Put him in the right system and nurture good habits and you could have a helluva player for the modern NBA. I’m buying, even if I have to approach the max.

I've said before i'm an idiot when it comes to these negotiations but why the waiting game? If henny said we're bringing him back no matter what why don't we just offer him the contract? Is it just waiting to see what kind of offer he gets? why not just offer him 15 and be done with it?

i think that is part of it. We can also go over the cap to sign our own free agents. So if Henny spends money on someone else first, he can then spend it then on Harris without worry. If someone tries to make a move now and has to free up cap space, we can still absorb someone for assets. But if we sign Harris now, we dont have the flexibility to strike when another team tries to find a take to make a move.

Never negotiate against yourself. We have put a number out there in the past (and maybe even again recently) which if he were interested in then we would sign and be done today. But he wants (and probably deserves) more so let him go out and figure out just what the market is.

Aslso, just because we missed on Milsap doesn't mean we are done in free agency. This silence on Harris likely means Henny is very noisy on other fronts.

so there is yet a contract to be offered, right? Id think he would have received one yesterday if he was high on teams priorities.

Why would they offer Tobias when they know the Magic might match before they take shots at other free agents who are Unrestricted? Everyone is trying to get the unrestricted guys to come their way. If that falls through, then they go after restricted as they know they'll most likely have to overpay to pry them away from their respective teams.

Well.... knicks just got afflalo.... and are apparently making a push for Greg Monroe. Assuming the selections of Jerian Grant and Porzingis are to be used to immediately fill in the gaps they might not have the room in the starting line up to go after Tobias.

Grant
Afflalo
melo
Porzingis
Monroe

wouldn't be a bad lineup to roll out with next season. Hopefully that's another offseason big spender off the list as potential suitors. Lakers are obviously in play after striking out on initial contacts.

Because he can't actually sign before the 8th, it makes no sense to announce receiving an offer sheet. The magic could simply state their intention to match said offer sheet scaring off any other potential offer sheets

Seems like the only suitors for Tobias are Detroit and LA.

Here in LaLa Land, all of the 710 ESPN guys want Tobias as their #1 FA target. They are torn on price tag though. Some say no more than $12mil a year, and a few are saying max. I wouldn't put too much stock in this though, as just last week they thought he was unrestricted and thought they could wooo him easily.
Do not max Vuc!

Agreed. But if they get the sense we're matching whatever, do they waste their time? I guess they make the effort to show their fans they're trying?

Wouldn't be surprised if he just took the QO to try at it again next summer with larger cap and more teams willing to play ball when he doesn't have the leash around his neck.

Agreed. We're too starved for talent to let him walk.

We're unable to attract someone that would replace him.

Twitter is indicating the Knicks have turned their attention to Tobias Harris now that Monroe has signed with Milwaukee. They're also targeting Beverley and David Lee.
