Back up PG.

Post#1 » by bomberjame » Thu Jul 2, 2015 3:25 am

HI everyone
Been reading everyday and thought I would post some of my own thoughts.
I think we can all agree that Brian Roberts clearly cant be our secondary PG long term and heaven forbid Kemba picks up a long term injury we would need a more substantial replacement.
Mo was fantastic in the role while Kemba was out injured but struggled on his return and now looks likely to sign a long term deal with Memphis.
Our options are limited for a replacement due to us only having the mid level exception available.

My main 2 targets would be Aaron Brooks from the Bulls. He can flat out score and is very comfortable in a reserve position and Patrick Beverly who us a great defensive PG who could be a starter for some teams.

I think the need for a back up point is much more pressing than signing Marco Belinelli and would be dissapointed if we used oour mid level exception on him with out addressing this need first.

What are your thoughts?

I honestly don't mind the team preferring to use the bulk of their free agency spendings on another wing over a backup PG. Marco Belinelli makes sense because he can play SF/SG/PG. I like the idea of adding more size & versatility to the roster, likewise with Nicolas Batum, even if I don't know if Clifford's preset rotations and lack of adjustments would make use of it just yet

Our backup could be on our SL roster. I love me some Aaron Craft. Above average passer with an insane work ethic, and can straight up lock someone down. His shooting is.... Not so good, though.

I'd play him over Brian Roberts easily.

Kinda reminds me of Patrick Beverley a tad, except Beverley can hit the deep ball at a half decent rate.

I'd happily trade them the 2nds and PJ back. PJ is pointless with Batum, Lamb, and Daniels on the roster

One could argue the same for Lamb being pointless.

Just let Lamb and PJ be the backup wings. No one wants to see Marvin Williams trying to chase around SF's and passing up wide open shots. If we can't even give our young guys a shot on the second unit then we might as well just trade all our draft picks from here on out. I'd rather use the MLE for a backup point than someone like Bellinelli and just see what PJ can do with a consistent role.

edit: We can give them a cool stoner nickname like "The Bong Boys" or something. For the fans.

With so much FA chasing/cap management going on it seems like some backup PG of value will fall through the cracks/become collateral damage. Like Pooty, I would love to be surprised by Craft and am less concerned by his shooting with Lamb/Hawes/PJ on second unit. Seems like a defense minded distributor would fit right in. Beverley would be my option 1. He's restricted (1 year, 2.73 mil QO from Rockets), and is drawing lots of attention (Mavs, Kings, Knicks, Cavs, etc.) but I've seen projections that a 4 year mid level deal could get it done. He's not a great shooter (passable) and played off ball a lot with Harden on the floor (so not sure what type of distributor he is), but he brings an elite level NBA skill in perimeter D, which we will sorely need with our second unit.

Not a huge fan of Brooks.

MPM, if we could get Beverley for the mid-level, I would be all for it, but I don't think that's the case. Even if he'll get a deal in that area, why not chose the NYK for example, where he can easily be the starting PG in 2 months' time? I don't like Brooks either.

Beverly is a best-case scenario but I don't think he's willing to be a backup just yet. Not a fan of Brooks. His offense is terribly inefficient and he really thinks he's better than he is too. I'm hoping Craft can step up and step in, because good, cheap, reliable PGs are hard to come by. All we need is a guy who can defend, make the easy pass, and keep guys reeled in.

Bence - absolutely agree. We're not the most attractive landing pad for Beverley and I realistically think he'll wind up somewhere other than CLT. My lone hope rides on other teams getting distracted chasing bigger game (Rondo, Matthews, LMA, etc.) and Beverley's side getting impatient.

Interesting take from a NYK perspective: http://nypost.com/2015/07/01/patrick-beverley-pings-on-knicks-radar/

I think P-Bev is exactly what we need. Good from distance, great defensive guard - I actually don't understand why he isn't rated higher across the league :-?

I read somewhere that Houston are very unlikely to let Beverly go, especially after that euro point guard stayed away

Yep - just read this - Lull decided to stay with Real Madrid. Guessing this is Bev's money now.

Aaron Craft could be our very own Matthew Delladova type player. I wouldn't mind signing him for cheap initially as a 3rd string backup PG 'if' he can prove that he belong on the NBA level. From there, maybe he could battle with Brian Roberts to see if he deserve 2nd string

Charlotte's current lack of cap space put them in a bit of a fickle. I wouldn't trust using the MLE on a backup PG as much as I would on a solid wing player, so they should go the bargain route for a reserve point guard

Aaron Brooks, AJ Price, CJ Watson. one of those three will be good.

I dont think Beverly can be had for MLE, he will get at least 7 million.

I'm voting Kendall Marshall.

suspect on D but he can definitely get that second unit flowing. All these wings now we need someone who can distribute the rock. He shoots about 40% from 3. Coming off a acl tear and his 3rd team in 3? Years so he should definitely be cheap.

And it's not like the 3 teams is a representation of his talent. Lakers dropped him to make space but were going to resign him. Bucks stole him, he tears his acl so they cut him for space. Kind of a. "Well sh** happens" kind of thing.
