I expect Magic to match any offers.. You don't let a 17/6 guy that's 22 year old go. He might not be a star, but he's only gonna get better and better, and is well worth the max, especially in this new market.

I am not a fan of maxing Tobias, but given that we are not in the loop for any good FA, letting him go would make this summer a failure. I say keep the guy and hope Skiles figures out how to maximize his talent (I know of their Milwaukee history).

The Tobias Harris Situation

Post#2405 » by tooler » Thu Jul 2, 2015 3:35 pm

More players seem to be betting on themselves now. I wonder if he will do a 3 year max with player option like Monroe and Millsap. Kind of risky with his injury history, but money is flowing so freely anyway.

I still think the Magic should consider 5/70 to keep the yearly rate down. He would probably be the worst 5/70 signing out of Bledsoe, Knight, Middleton, etc. but that's better than the max.

Anyway, it doesn't matter much in the long run. Only talking a few million.

I bet Tobias will take the QO, my worst fear, and totally screw us so that he's a FA next summer when there are even more deals to be had.

Worst than all 3 of those? You think?

Looking at it again, Brandon Knight seems pretty bad with less of a chance to break out in a new offense. So third place!

5/70 will look like a pretty good deal soon enough, it's the reason so many teams are handing out big contracts this offseason. We whiffed on Millsap, I say we sign Harris before the cap goes up and the price of locking up a player gets even steeper.

I'm not AS familiar with Bledsoe, so I can't really speak, but I do think Tobias would be a better signing at 70 than middleton.

The Tobias Harris Situation

Hmm, I'm torn on something. I thought it was almost certain the Lakers and New York would offer him the max to look like they're "doing something."

But what if they're embarrassed about striking out and don't want another public failure on record? Surely someone in those organizations must know it's highly likely we will match. Or maybe they're all yes men and they will try it anyway.

since offers cannot be official until June 8th, i dont see any RFA getting offers right now except from their own teams.

I would be perfectly fine with him taking the QO...then we can evaluate things again at the deadline.

If he takes the QO, we can't trade him without his consent.

Was unaware of that....

either way, I would say there is little chance he takes the QO.

I'm sure Detroit thought that also with Monroe.

Monroe didn't have same choice as Harris has this summer.

If Harris picks up the QO he loses his bird rights

...my guess is he'll sign a 3 year max offer sheet with player option on year 3 and a 15% trade kicker. Insures himself against injury, keeps his bird rights, and can become free agent the summer when cap expands to +110m ...perfectly timed for his prime contract (25-29).

It is just LAL now at this point, yes? And they are going to offer him a max? I don't see it. I'm still predicting we negotiate a great deal with him and he never signs an offer sheet.

Nah...various teams can simply waive/renounce cap holds to create enough to offer him max - especially teams that have/will strike out on Aldridge/Monroe...not to mention teams that are right now honing in on him and trying to make trades to be able to make an offer.

Detroit for instance had about 41m in guaranteed salaries + they just added $8m (Morris, Bullock, Granger) with the recent trade. That gives them 49m. Plus they added Baynes 6m per. That still leaves them with 14 million in cap space, so they can make a small move to make enough room....plus they can clear another 18 million by renouncing Prince and Anthony's cap holds. Since R Jackson is RFA they can match and go over their cap too...They are far from out of the Harris hunt.
