Cap Space Projection Post-Robin Lopez

Post#1 » by Nyk4lyfe » Fri Jul 3, 2015 7:39 am

My estimate of how much cap space we have left. There are definitely better cap experts on this board so let me know if i'm wrong!:

Carmelo Anthony: $22,875,000
Robin Lopez: $12,709,601.87 (assuming he's getting that rumored 4 years 50 mil)
Aaron Afflalo: $7,823,960.88
Jose Calderon: $7,402,812
Kristap Porzingis: $3,443,100
Jerian Grant: $1,310,300
Cleanthony Early: $845,059
Langston Galloway: $845,059
Cap Holds (x4): $2,030,532

Total: $59,285,424

2015-2015 Salary Cap: $69,000,000 (if report of additional $2mil cap space is true, I think at the very least it will be $1 mil extra)

Total Cap Space: $9,714,596

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hypothetical Cap Space if we stretched and waived Calderon: $13,650,537 (would have been about 500k more but there would now be an additional empty roster spot cap hold that we have to account for)

Mainly made this thread to update ourselves on current cap situation but will also give hypothetical situations that could happen if we stretched Calderon, just for sh*ts and giggles. Before the inevitable criticism, I just want to make it clear that I'm posting these options just to show what type of flexibilty we have, not really endorsing these moves, persay.

Plan A:
1) Sign Tobias Harris for slightly under the max, hope he bites and Magic don't match (long shot?)
2) Sign Aldrich or Perkins to mini-MLE after exhausting all cap space (2 years, 5 mil total)
3) Sign a backup SG whose willing to take the veteran minimum near the end of FA (Alonzo Gee or Jimmer maybe?)

PG: Jerian Grant / Langston Galloway (or would Galloway start... input?)
SG: Arron Afflalo / Jimmer Fridette
SF: Tobias Harris / Cleanthony Early
PF: Carmelo / Kristaps Porzingis
C: Robin Lopez / Cole Aldrich

Plan B:
1) Sign Patrick Beverly at starting salary of 8mil/year
2) Sign Kousta Koufous to salary starting at 7 mil/year (possible because 500k opens up from Beverely taking away 500k cap hold. Good insurance for if Rolo gets hurt and heavily underrated player in general)
3) Sign Glen Davis or Darrel Arthur to mini-MLE after exhausting all cap space (2 years, 5 mil total)

PG: Patrick Beverly/ Langston Galloway
SG: Arron Afflalo / Jerian Grant
SF: Carmelo Anthony / Cleanthony Early
PF: Kristaps Porzingis / Glen Davis
C: Robin Lopez / Kousta Koufos

Obviously none of these lineups were ideally what we wanted (although I gotta admit, the starting lineups are defensively sound for both), but gotta make the best of what we got and hope we win a decent enough games to attract a good free agent next summer (my early estimate is that we will have around $20 mil in cap space).

Edit: Lowered all these cap space numbers by approximately 1 mil because Robin Lopez ended up signing for around that much more than what was originally rumor. Also, I think Beverely is gone now but i'll leave him in there cause of laziness.

Please correct Arron Afflalo's salary to the numbers that I calculated myself:

2015-2016: $7,823,960.88
2016-2017: $8,176,039.12
TOTAL: $16,000,000.00

The rooks name is Jerian Grant, not Jeremiah

I do think he should change it to Jeremiah though

No problem. Really, we don't know yet if Afflalo is getting EXACTLY $16 million. If he was though, then these are the numbers that make the most sense if the 4.5% raise is in effect.

I'm hoping we sign Jordan Hill, who'd be a nice PF alongside Melo & Rolo

Under Plan B, we could probably do that instead of giving Koufos the 7 mil (and then signing a center for MLE like Aldrich or Okafor) but I kinda don't want to have to see Jordan Hill's face every night. It will constantly remind me of what transpired in that draft a few years back

i like alonzo gee....but maybe we can split the remaining cash between barf/shved and gallo on 1 year deals to prove themselves.

shved and gallo can play pg or sg and barf can play pf or c so they have some versatility and theyd help the transition for the newer players to the triangle.

Good thread. The good news is there's still more ways that Phil can't upgrade the roster further. Exciting time to be a Knoicks fan.

If that is in fact our total cap space left (without stretching Calderon), then the best contract we can offer ONE player for four years by my calculations is worth a grand total of: $47,679,952.20

So basically, we have around 4 years/$48 million to give to one player. This probably would not dissuade the Magic from matching Tobias Harris.

If we stretch Calderon, then the best contract we can offer is around 4 years/$65 million. This possibly gives us a chance to land Tobias Harris.

Wow damn, really? 4/65 seems like a solid amount.

Love Tobias, dont think he would be a good fit since him or Melo would have to play PF for the forseeable future. And Kristaps is much more suited to play PF than C. And I dont want anyone blocking Kristaps from becoming a starter in his 2nd yr and beyond. But either way, if that amount is indeed correct, I would see if Tobias signs and pray ORL doesnt match. I think they would, but its worth a shot.

I happened to have read on one of the endless salary cap sites today that the Knicks may actually be able to fit BOTH Robin Lopez and OKC RFA center Enes Kanter into the payroll, providing Phil and Co. can be creative in the bookkeeping. As much as Oklahoma wants to keep Kanter—after all, OKC loves this kid's offense although his defense needs improvement, the bigger issue is the Luxury Tax. I think Kanter has until Monday to make a decision on the QO. With New York seemingly having just enough cap monies available for Enes and Robin, this may or may not be a major coup.

I imagine that Shved as well as certain other notables would all have to be renounced in order to avoid cap holds, Calderon would need to be waived via the stretch provision, and Cole Aldridge would need to also go...Damn Monroe! He holds up every thing The site I used was this

I would hope that Orlando wouldn't be able or willing to match a 4/65. I have always liked Tobias and at his youthful age, NY should go after him. He can play both forward positions as well as give Melo rest when needed...

still some decent player out there
Tobias Harris
Gerald Green - still has some hoops, improved 3pt shooter
Darrell Arthur - good back up PF
KJ McDaniels - young legs....
Ekpe Udoh - is decent back up PF imo..
Dorell Wright - great 3pt shooter
pretty sure Koufos will go for starting job with Lakers, his like the only one they can sign

Get tobias. A Sf/PF rotation of melo/harris/porzingis I think would work. FInd vet min center/PF/SG somewhere and call it a day.

Not exactly sure how they work, but couldn't they spend up to the cap and then trade for players with salary other teams don't want using the trade exceptions?

Like say spend up to the cap , then trade Calderon + trade exception for someone who makes more then Calderon?

Kanter really seems to have blossomed since being in OKC, it would be surprising to see him leave.

That said he would be a great addition, and hopefully one on the rise.

It would probably hurt the development of both Porzingis and Hernangomez though....

Pretty sure trade exceptions cannot be combined together OR with a player.

Tobias Harris would be a good pickup but I can see Phil taking the Plan B route and spreading the money between 2 players
