When Josh Smith Signs a new deal....

Post#1 » by GreekAlex » Fri Jul 3, 2015 5:55 pm

When Josh Smith Signs a new deal this off season how does it effect the Pistons Cap numbers?

I just read a report since the Kings cleared all that cap space and seem to be striking out they will be talking to Josh Smith.

They may finally get their wish LOL

I don't want to jinx it but it said something about $10 M for smoove. Image

If he does sign for that $10M what would that do to the figure the Pistons have against their cap via the stretch provision?

Why do you have a pic of Dinwiddie in there?

To express my shock that the Kings gave away Nick Stauskus and first round picks to make room to possibly sign Josh Smith.

That look on Spencer's face is how mine looked when I read this LOL

His deal divided by two less vets minimum for his YOS. So if he signs for 10M it's 10M/2-1.5M = 3.5M.

So we'd save 3.5M off his stretch cap hit.

3.5M off the 5M on this years cap or total?

Total, if he signs a deal that totals 10 million.

If he signs a 2 year deal at 10 mill per, for instance, we'd shave off 8.5 mill total (20/2 - 1.5M) = 8.5

Keep in mind that's still stretched out over the life of the stretch provision, which goes another 4 or 5 years, I don't remember. Its not going to be a game changer. It won't suddenly give us max cap space. But its not negligible.

Well lets let by gone's be by gone's and cheer for Josh to get the biggest deal possible!

Whats the best case scenario for this off season as far as gaining cap space? An extra 2-3M?

I have no idea what the Kings could offer, so that's hard to say. I still envision him probably getting a short deal, though the Kings seem to be willing to overpay for everyone.

Kings are trying to back out of the Philly deal so they may not even have room to sign Josh

You mean this? It's a fan talking and doesn't mean anymore than someone posting an idea here. No one would ever trust the Kings again.

Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

It's just talk... they couldn't have agreed to the deals they did with Rondo & Bellinelli without the Philly salary dump.

The stretch seems like it could be abused... If a player doesn't like his coach he basically tanks the season... then he get stretched and he smiles all the way to the bank with his preferred team.
