Starting Power Forward

Post#1 » by boomershadow » Sat Jul 4, 2015 8:52 am

It seems to me that this is the biggest piece of the puzzle to be figured out this offseason. Barring any trades (which are certainly possible given our desire to move on from Hibbert), our lineup almost certainly at this point looks like Hibbert/X/George/Ellis/Hill.

Do you expect our starting 4 to come via free agency? From inside the organization in the form of Scola or Allen? As part of a trade package involving Hibbert?

Or much less likely, Paul George? Bird got asked this question in media earlier this year and said no, that David West would be the starter. I doubt that West's departure changes that. But we have also seen more indications since then that going small is the direction the Pacers want to take.

I'd be fine with Lavoy if we get someone his equal to back him up.

I also expect Lavoy and Myles Turner to start at the 4 and 5 spots. Unless we really plan on signing a starting caliber big man that can run.

A 19 year old starter?

I doubt it.

I also like Allen a lot too, but as a starter? I dunno. He played really well last season early in the season and was pretty good in advanced stats... until about January. Then supposedly he hit a "wall" and came down back to where he normally is at in his career. Did he hit a wall or did teams figure him out? Or did he just go on a good run? Either way, still lots of questions about Allen. I'm happy with him being a depth guy, as the numbers make it seem that is what he is, but as a starter? Let's hit them breaks a bit...

I'm hoping for a Taj Gibson or Kenneth Faried deal.

Bulls are pushing the lux tax and want Stuckey, a S&T with Taj coming back would be amazing. He seems to be the odd big out.

Yeah, either of those would be huge. Not sure how realistic they are though.

Well if we could get Taj I'd be pretty happy. He's a bit injury prone. Karied is paid a lot and isn't much of a defender.

Well now that Roy has been traded, I am all in on playing small ball. Indy can target a number of guys such as Josh Smith (Had a good end to season in Houston), Danilo Gallinari or Wilson Chandler (Denver wants to tank), Terrence Jones possibly can be had from Houston (Name always seems to pop up in trades as a dump for salary - I would love this move), Wes Johnson (3 and d guy), Jeff Green could potentially be had (Acquired matt Barnes, also still have tony Allen - Another move I would love), Luc Richard Mbah a Moute (CHeaper but was a hell of a defender in Milwaukee), Danny Granger (obviously a political pick, should be cheap).

From my perspective Bird should be on the phone with Houston and Memphis at least checking the availability of Jones or Green. Jeff Green plays with a chip on his shoulder and would be fun to watch under a bravado coach like Vogel. He is one of those guys that can completely take a game over on any random night. Terrence Jones is one of those guys that does a lot well without the ball being in his hands very often. Both are still fairly young exciting players.

David Leeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Honestly, he can play PF and C, and is certain to be a good mentor for Turner, while still being able to help lead you to the playoffs before going away as a FA or possibly being resigned cheap if he likes it there. He seems like a Bird type of guy, particularly on a super young team.

I think he's your man.

I just saw a report that we have $13.3 million in cap room. How about offering Tristan Thompson $13 million a year for 4 yrs. With 5% raises that's 4/$56 I think. If may force the Cavs to match and have a huge tax bill, if not we get one heck of a good rebounder.

We're gonna need to get paid something for taking Lee. I'd want Looney.

Yes, doubtful indeed. But I don't think we are going to land a starting center that would fit what Vogel's looking for via free agency. It is possible that Lavoy starts at center and Paul George at the 4, but would depend on the matchup. Until then, the best talent we have at the big men spots would be Allen and Turner.

With Stuckey now added to the fold I'm thinking either we bring back Scola or sign Brandon bass or maybe both. Hopefully in a way to have as much cap room for next summer to upgrade the PF spot

How much would he want i wonder? I don't want to over spend this summer on third tier type players and kill our cap space for next summer when we can hope to attract some higher level players.

Hopefully like $5 million but I'm not sold on him. I want another big body that stands a chance on being able to defend Aldrige, Randolph, Love, Dirk, and the other bigger PF's so Paul doesn't get wrecked.

Well Brandon Bass is gone. Jordan Hill is still out there along with Scola, Bargnani, Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, Jason Smith, Josh Smith, and Reggie Evans...

Of that group, I think I like Jason Smith the most. Decent mid-range game, also capable of hitting the occasional three.
I really like Scola, because he knows the system, but he has regressed. Age is a factor and he's not going to get faster and more athletic.

I'd offer Scola $5 million 2 yrs 2nd yr un guaranteed. Then we could use his contract next season to make a trade.
