I wouldn't give up $10 million to win.

I'd rather have $10 million and be on a terrible team. :P

Why? It's $10 mil that he gave up, and he's not guaranteed to win squat for it. Yeah, he's got a much better shot to win this year, but at a massive cost of $10 mil.

believe it or not some athletes understand they've made enough money and will take the chance to win over getting paid.

I don't think there is any chance that Markieff Morris can stay on the Suns, him and Marcus considered themselves a package deal. "He goes, I go" straight from the horse's mouth.

He may take some heat from the union for the move, but as you note, he probably sees the Spurs as his best chance for a ring before he retires.

I like competition and hate frontrunning. The Lakers played pretty ball with Phil and Shaq but I still hated it when Malone and Payton tried to draft on them.

Agreed. I've never been a fan of veteran players signing with the best teams at huge discounts in an attempt to disrupt the competitive balance, either. It's a damn shame that it's now happening with the Spurs.

West has already made $87MM in his career. If he thinks his best chance is to take the league minimum with the Spurs for one season then I say go for it. If they do not win a title this season he can still likely cash in on another two year deal for $10MM per.

West if he had just a medium level of financial smarts up until now, he'd have around 30-40 million or more in the bank earning interest, so he'll live a very very comfortable life going forward, even with taking a 10 million dollar hit this year. Plus, he'll earn millions more after this season, but at this moment, he wants a ring more than adding millions more that he'd likely never end up spending anyways. Makes sense to me.

NBA money is so large, it's not something we can relate with everyday people. Someone making say 30-40 grand a year might leave a job they like if a 10 grand raise is offered and it makes sense. That extra 10 grand could have a big impact on their lives. With higher end pro athletes though who have already made say 50-70-100 plus million dollars, only a complete idiot wouldn't be so set financially for life. At that money level, you could have almost anything you wanted. Never have to work again after retiring. Could spend the rest of your life traveling the world if you wanted to. Extra millions are only numbers in a bank account.

... I'd still take the $10 million dollars.

but the Lakers had bought plenty of Chamionships, I can't hate on the Spurs and can't hate on David West dumping 10 million on the table for a shot at a ring

He's already earned about 80 million dollars and will earn millions more after this season. What about making 10 million less this year will crimp his lifestyle going forward? Hell. if he's been smart with his money so far, he'll make millions in interest on his money going forward.

I'd get it being crazy had West been a fringe player with limited earnings so far, instead of a guy who already has made 80 million dollars. Think about that number, 80 million. That's so much cash. So he traded tacking on more to try and win a ring. Doing so, that tells me that he's very comfortable with his financial situation.

So he gave up 11% of his total career earnings in a single year. That's no joke, man.

Just because he makes more than we do and has a lot of money doesn't mean he's not giving up an absurd amount.

I think it's pretty cool West gave up $10mil to play on the Spurs. I don't cheer for any NBA team outside of Milwaukee and the Bucks aren't competing before Duncan retires so the Spurs stacking the deck doesn't bother me.

if you think david west only has $40m in the bank, and hes turning down 10m to go ring chasing... if you have money, hire someone to manage it. if you dont, i see why.
