If healthy, Embiid won't be Shaq.. No one will I don't think. But he will be the best center in the league, and a top 10 player I think. His potential is off the charts.

BUT, if he needs further surgery and/or will miss significant time, and according to everyone "in the know," that seems like the post plausible outcome here, something that should be discussed I think is once (if?) Embiid comes back and he becomes the player everyone thinks he might be, he's only going to be a few years from unrestricted free agency.

At that point, I think, all bets are off. If the Sixers are continuing to lose, is it a guarantee that he re-signs? I think that will be the tell tale sign of where the Sixers are going. It's nice getting assets, but if you continue to lose, is that a situation where those young players are going to want to stay? Embiid's situation, being hurt and then once finally healthy being so close to free agency, will be pretty interesting to to see how it turns out.

Embiid isn't going anywhere if he's healthy. The way the Sixers are looking after him and looking out for his health he knows the Sixers are doing what's best for him. The Sixers will extend his contract. All rookies sign and stay for at least 7 years. And we won't continue to lose with or without Embiid. This next year will be the last year we will be bad. After that then we will be playing for playoff spots every year and should be one of the better teams in the league in 3 years.

In two years Embiid will be a Restricted FA, not unrestricted.

Like I said before, every day that passes the more nervous I get since if he was okay they would just release that info. Taking a long time means they're trying to devise the best course of action which wouldn't be good.

They likely have received differing opinions since they consulted more than a few different doctors so you're right, they are trying to devise the best course of action based on that. But i don't view that as a negative. In the past a team would have a doctor tell them, "well it's not 100% healed and it's likely that it never will be. He's not in pain so i say he's fine to play" Then the team plays him and a year later the stress fracture is back and he's having surgery again. They're trying to be proactive here and that gives me hope for Embiid's long term prospects.

Can everyone shut the hell up with negative speculation until after I enjoy Okafor tonight?

I know, it is my fault for clicking here, and by all means carry on. I just want to stop worrying about Embiid for once and enjoy the offseason.

This, 1 million times over. I am so tired of reading baseless speculation about bone grafts and the like (but like you cannot resist clicking). I wish we would just lock this thread until actual news comes out.

Maybe at the very least, change the thread title to "Embiid updates/discussion" instead of the "Uh Oh" title that freaks me out everytime I see it?

That's a good idea, thread title has been bothering me as well, more than 50 pages in it's due for a change.

Thanks for changing the title!

I just came across this article from three days ago:

http://6abc.com/sports/high-hopes-for-embiids-recovery-76ers-future/826991/

If you freeze the video, you can see someone measuring Embiid's standing reach in shoes. It's at the 22 second mark. Someone more familar with how they do this might be able to shed light on what his standing reach is now. Any takers?

Some are glass half full people and some are glass half empty people. In this case, I have no water. Just preparing for the worst.

He hits the 18th rung. Each rung is an inch. Without knowing where it starts its kind of hard to say though. If it starts at 8 feet then he's at 9'6", which would be longer than official measurements of everyone in the league but Javale McGee and Gobert.

Could Tom or Derek ask someone at the Sixers about official measurements, or at least where "it starts" there?

Joel Embiid was measured at a workout on Friday with a height of 7'1" in shoes.

Embiid has a 7'5.75" wingspan and 9'5.5" standing reach.

Embiid is expected to be one of the first three picks in the 2014 NBA Draft.

If he is 7'2 in sandals now, is it possible that his standing reach would still be at 9'6" and not have changed all that much?

I don't think that it works that way. They set the height of the whole apparatus at different positions depending on who is jumping, and then the rungs measure distance from that starting point.

Last year when testing Aaron Gordon they had to reset the device because he touched the highest rung.

So I don't think you can tell what this is set to just by the video.
