I cannot envision a positive scenario that would have gotten Aldridge to come here. We just aren't the Cats Meow for FA destinations. That changes if KD comes here, just as it changed for Cleveland when Lebron came.

No that changes when people stop acting like this is 1987 and Abe Pollin is the owner. Have you ever been to San Antonio? We are not Cleveland. I'm so sick of this has been mentality that says free agents don't want to come here. It's nonsense. Our team plus West and Aldridge is better than the Spurs plus West and Aldridge. Period. What else is there to sell (besides the coach and the GM, which are changeable)? We have a better city. We have a better future. This ho-hum we are the Wizards bs needs to stop, at all levels. Major market teams do not act this way.

Well said, These guys are human, there is more to it than numbers, they have their reasons for doing what they do, and that's that.

My draft board for the past years have been: Buy a pick and get Gobert; Draft Drummond; buy a pick and draft Marc Gasol, etc etc... Every single year I have outlined how to get a star big here: Don't trade for Gortat tank for a big; Don't resign Gortat, trade for Chandler, let him expire, and go after Aldridge or Love; trade Nene and clear out space to go after West and Aldridge.

All of those options also allow us to go after KD. The problem is management doesn't take risks.

Ok... enough... I'm repeating myself again...

Funny. The trade for Gorat was posted about on here as a huge risk.

The sky was falling. We gave up a lottery pick for a one year rental.

Lining things up to get KD is 2016 has been framed as a big risk.

Drafting KO over a more established funidental player is viewed as a risk.

DC is not a major market, sadly. We're 13th of 30. DC is a mid-tier market. An Eastern Motors commercial isn't very attractive.

One thing you're missing about San Antonio, despite them being a tiny market, they are a perennial powerhouse. 5 championships in 15 years. HOF coach, HOF GM, HOF Parker, Duncan, Ginobili. Kawhi Leonard. The best coached/run franchise in the league. Aldridge wanted to go home to Texas. And, finally, *no state tax*.

DC? 4 playoff visits in 20 years. Middling GM, poor coach, and zero chance to win a championship in the near future. 12%+ tax compared to San Antonio/Houston/Dallas/Miami/Orlando. Yes we have an awesome PG in Wall and an inconsistent Beal.

There is no comparison.

lIndy, you've always tried to downplay DC. They are now 13th? Do me a favor and tell me the twelve that are above us. It's nonsense. You are nonsense. I guess by your standards San Antonio is over us somehow? I say this with great love, shut the hell up.

OT, but I have to quibble with that. The Wizards' home metro area is *not* a mid-tier market; the Wizards just act like it is. Here's our market:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Metropolitan_Statistical_Areas

6M+ people in DC and its suburbs, which ranks #7 in the US.

Or, use this broader definition of metropolitan areas:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_metropolitan_areas_of_the_United_States

If you include Baltimore and the entire commuting region, the DMV pushes up to #4 -- trailing only NY, LA, and CHI.

If Baltimore and VA folks don't think of the Wizards as their home team, that's the Wizards' fault. Put a better product on the floor, and do better at marketing to the entire region.
Always remember, my friend: the world will change again. And you may have to come back through everywhere you've been.

Was going off this....13th according to the NBA. And Baltimore doesn't count IMO. No one in DC or VA gave a damn about the Orioles when I lived there in the late 90s.

The distance from Manassas to Baltimore is almost the same as NYC to Philly.

Calm down man, I love the passion but if you can't see San Antonio is a more attractive destination for players who want to win a championship you're being purposely stubborn.

The ranking of NBA media markets by population, according to Nielson:

Rank Team Media Market Population (000s)
1-2 New York Knicks / Brooklyn Nets 19995
3-4 Los Angeles Lakers / Los Angeles Clippers 17054
5 Chicago Bulls 9474
6 Toronto Raptors 7566
7 Philadelphia 76ers 7468
8 Dallas Mavericks 7090
9 Golden State Warriors 6750
10 Houston Rockets 6579
11 Boston Celtics 6448
12 Atlanta Hawks 6032
13 Washington Wizards 5982
14 Detroit Pistons 4938
15 Minnesota Timberwolves 4667
16 Phoenix Suns 4545
17 Cleveland Cavaliers 4053
18 Denver Nuggets 3921
19 Miami Heat 3842
20 Orlando Magic 3592
21 Charlotte Hornets 3462
22 Sacramento Kings 3400
23 Portland Trailblazers 3010
24 Indiana Pacers 2642
25 Utah Jazz 2505
26 Milwaukee Bucks 2255
27 San Antonio Spurs 2193
28 Oklahoma City Thunder 1737
29 Memphis Grizzlies 1604
30 New Orleans Pelicans 1559

Here is a link the format is messed up.

DC has the fifth largest populaction center. Almost fourth. You have been trying to claim DC is a **** city for a decade. Shut up, respectfully.

Nelson is nonsense because it doesn't demonstrate the actual market.

Nielsen ratings are used for ad pricing and potential sales.

It's accurate the NBA uses it for their own marketing purposes. Why am I the bad guy here again? I've been a Bullets fan for over 20 years. I love the damn team. How can you argue with Nielsen ad ratings? It determines viewership size.

That explains how they get from 11th (the lowest I see DC ranked anywhere, using any population measure) to 13th: NYC and LA, with two teams each, take up the top four slots. so 11th out of 28 markets, by the NBA's measure.

PS: People in DC area followed the Bullets a bit when they were in Baltimore. People in DC and Virginia used to follow the Orioles more, until they realized the Orioles owner was actively preventing the area from getting its own team (also, he was the Dan Snyder of Baltimore).

The Wizards have spent more of their years in Baltimore and PG County than in DC proper. Baltimore's less than 40 miles away from DC. Of course Baltimore counts. I grew up in Columbia, MD, and rooted for the O's, Bullets, and Skins growing up.

I'm sure folks from San Jose were quite happy when GSW won -- and that's further away from San Francisco than Baltimore is from DC.

Haha. For whatever it is worth, the NBA and all advertisers go by Nielsen ratings (the NBA provides many of the variables as their partner) as it is an actual reflection of the number of television households who have the potential to watch a basketball game.

For instance here are the top markets for the World Cup. Demographics, income/age/education etc are taken into consideration to determine number of potential fans in a city. The NBA works closely with Nielsen to determine these for each market. It's business 101....know your market.

http://www.nielsen.com/us/en/insights/news/2010/world-cup-reaches-one-third-of-all-u-s-tv-viewers.html

Population does not represent a market size for a product. Income, gender, race, education, TV ratings, apparel sales etc do.....otherwise every team would be fighting to set up a team in Mexico City and London. Teams would even consider El Paso/Juarez a potential market.

Well then perhaps part of the problem is that management doesn't explain to the public that "DC" extends from Baltimore to Richmond.

Interestingly the Nielsen/NBA market for DC is defined quite clearly and does extend to the border of Baltimore (but not any further north)/and the border of Richmond.

Check out the map, the Nielsen area for TV is shown. Pretty fascinating and unbelievably helpful if spending ad money on Google Adwords or other display networks. Nielsen data has made/saved me a lot of money by marketing only to specific zip codes based on TV show comps within comparable demographics.

For frick sake, you keep underestimating the people from Baltimore to richmond to philly, who buy bullets gear. The market is larger than estimated.
