Very true, holds for any product with wide appeal.

That all being said, DC is a very unique market. Middle class to upper class are the most transient in the nation. Only 37.3% of DC residents were born in DC. The number hovers around the same for "the beltway area". Taking all this into account, this was a really interesting article about the sports makeup of DC. It's likely the most difficult area in which to market a professional team, population alone is very deceiving.

Just 48% of pro football fans in the area say the Redskins "are their favorite team." Among area baseball fans, 51% “support either the Nationals or the Orioles, while 16 percent favor either the Yankees or the Red Sox.” Twenty-nine percent of area basketball fans "choose the Wizards as their favorite team, with a stunning 14 percent identifying the Los Angeles Lakers and 9 percent the Boston Celtics." Forty-two percent of area soccer fans “say D.C. United is their favorite professional team.” Thirty-seven percent of area sports fans aged 18-39 “have ‘strongly’ favorable views of the Capitals, more than double that of any other area team.” The Capitals “are chosen as the favorite NHL team by 72 percent of area hockey fans, dwarfing any other local franchise.” The poll also confirmed that DC is a "decidedly pro sports market; 55 percent of area sports fans favor pro sports and only 10 percent choose colleges." Thirty-five percent “say they like both college and pro sports equally.” DC residents said that “they care about sports, even more so than Americans at large,” with 83% calling themselves “sports fans” and 45% “describing their passion as greater than casual.” That compares to 75% of Americans who “call themselves sports fans, with 38 percent saying they’re more than casual fans” (WASHINGTON POST, 10/23).

Should be a fun battle between Ballmer and Cuban. I gotta think though with an effective 58-60% tax rate in California, Dallas retains his verbal commitment.

I think DAJ going back to the Clippers would help the Wiz. It takes both teams effectively out of the running for Durant next summer. The Clips won't have the money and the Mavs won't have a good enough team.

I think we have to see how this plays out before we can reach that conclusion. With the old Clippers, DJ would have been so happy to be gone he wouldn't have had second thoughts - or maybe he would have just gone and signed with the Lakers.

Texas teams definitely have a big advantage with free agents since there is no state income tax. Doubtful Jordan goes back to LA. Not sure but Cali's state tax might be the highest in the country.

This. And also, the Clippers, with DAJ, may be strong enough to knock a healthy OKC out of the playoffs, which would also help. With San Antonio, Golden State and the Clippers, there are a lot of tough high end teams. As good as Cleveland may be next year, the West is brutal.

In a sense I agree with you and see where you're coming from, but my point was a top-tier team doesn't try to backdoor another team. Everything I've read is that once a principle deal is in place, teams respect that and move on. The Clippers still trying to recruit him back is low brow to me and seems like something only a bottom dweller franchise would do.

We should all be rooting for the Clippers to retain Jordan. With Jordan gone, Dallas becomes a much less attractive destination for Durant, and the Clippers won't have the cap room for Durant. So basically, the move would eliminate two of the top Durant suitors.
