Not sure if they did that or not, but doing that based on a verbal commitment is really dumb. In real world the percentage of people who accept counter offers is actually quite high, no one should think they've hired someone until they show up for work.

In the real world most of us don't give verbal commitments to employers and then back out. That's not a good look or an acceptable practice. Once you get an offer from a company you are under no obligation to verbally accept the offer. In most cases you are given some time to accept or reject the offer.

This just isn't reality in the professional world. Most people don't receive counter offers, but for those who did, the number who accept them is fairly high, around %50 IIRC.

Counters offers are something else. People will often interview for multiple jobs at a time if they can get those interviews and then decide between the best offers. Counter offers are more common when you are already working and they really want you to join the company but it's considered acceptable practice in the professional world to say yes to a company verbally, no to another and then try to go back to the company you said no to.

I'm sick of these clowns prancing through free agency like princesses, wanting everyone to tell them how great they are while they're wined and dined. Be a professional, and have some integrity.

It's shady by the Clips. Teams start making moves based on your commitment. So many dominos fall differently if he picked the Clips originally. Do we know if the clips initiated the talks?

I am not a fan of either team. But it seems to me that if your client leaves tens of millions on the table to go to another team, he better be perfectly comfortable and clear that that is what he wants to do. If he is having doubts, you have not done your job as an agent.

If the Clips are offering a home team max, or even just more than Dallas, I don't blame DJ one bit. Its his right to decide. Its the way free agency goes. The Suns lost out on lots of free agents in the pursuit of LMA. Can't cry about it.

Honestly, if I were his agent I'd tell him to sign a two-year deal with a P.O. in the second year where ever he wanted to sign. First, the cap is going up, and second, he clearly doesn't like either option enough to sign there long term if he's this on the fence. Sounds to me like he wanted off of the Clippers and just realized that the Mavs don't have a starting caliber PG on their roster.

if a player changes his mind on his own that's fine. The problem with this situation is the Clippers aggressively trying to get Jordan to change his mind. This would set a very dangerous precedent for the league if owners feel empowered to F over each other after a player announces his decision. A definite breach of ethics.

The rules are probably being rewritten as we speak. This is only the inevitable result of this whole moratorium thing.

i really doubt there would be any claim for promissory estoppel. the mavericks are a shrewd business organization, negotiating huge deals, and operate under a set of rules which preclude legal enforcement. there's really no way they can claim reliance.

Admittedly we don't know what they said, and it's fair to expect both sides acted well aware of league rules, but nevertheless verbal contracts are legally binding, and clauses in written agreements have been known to be struck out when contested in court.

I don't see the benefits of this to be honest, for the Clippers. Yeah it keeps their best rim protector in town, but this is going to be their team for the next 2 years or so. An aging Chris Paul, and a 2nd round playoff exit. You can make the argument they're better off being a lottery team, adding a young piece in the draft and see what they can do with the cap space next offseason. Jordan coming back effectively takes them out of the Durant sweepstakes.
