That thought also creeped my mind as well DD, but Bird is a better GM than to resort to that. I'd be almost shocked. Nothing shocks me in this league, but that would be close.

Given the trends of what we're seeing, how defense only bigs can be played off the court, and Bird wanting a quick rebuild, it can't be that surprising.dipstick wrote:
For players, reputation when dealing with other teams after this contract runs out. Then again that may be 4 or 5 years down the line and the damage has already been done by now.
Whatever happens, Im happy we didnt get the knucklehead.
We will find out soon enough also as we are rushing tp finish all the deals up so that we can sign Russell his max rookie scale contract. Just wondering why no word is out about the final cap figure.
The player's reputation is just short term. If DAJ still puts up high volume numbers, he'll still be sought out in free agency. I know you're thinking that teams won't take him seriously the next time around, but that doesn't apply since we've seen teams over and over bend over backwards to sign a player for reasons worse than changing their mind in free agency.
True, but this will leave a sour taste in teams' mouths. How can you go after a player then find out right before signing that you're screwed. Just like saving space for a rfa. It doesnt happen because of the uncertainty.
This is going to be a horrendous precedent if Jordan resigns with the Clippers. Could lead to teams sabotaging other teams with players reneging on "agreed" terms.
No need to go down a slippery slope. Let's say in the future that things happen as they do except it's happening now with the Clippers, Mavs, and DAJ. What do the Clips gain in "sabotaging" the Mavs? And why would you think the league would allow this to happen? With everything being leaked, it's certainly not worth the risk since any type of salary cap tampering comes with penalties.
While I don't think all that highly of DAJ's impact, he's still a good player. Good players are sought after. Team will still set up meetings with him should he be a free agent again later on and continues a close level of play. We can look no further can Carlos Boozer. Sure this puts the Mavs in a crappy situation, but it's really no different than saying "no" much later on.

Not really thinking about this situation when I said sabotage. But this reeks of bad faith in itself. Taking the last day to talk to the Clippers then locking out the team you agreed to? Couldnt have gone any better for the Clippers or Mavs haters.

I suppose the silver lining for Lakers fans here is...all the heat the Lakers took for having to schedule 2 meetings with LMA beccause the 1st one was poor is now on the back burner since this DAJ story broke out.

Kilroy wrote:Trades are different than free agent signings. Trades have to be approved by the league. I've never seen a team back out of an agreed upon trade without cause.
Agreeing to sign a contract is different. It's basically just the word of the player. But even then, it's almost unprecedented that a player back out.
What they're really discussing though is a sign and trade... Not trying to change DAJ's mind about leaving.
dockingsched wrote:Teams don't back out of trades because the ramifications of it would be very long term. They have to continue dealings with other teams and agents forever.
For players what's the real downside except for public opinion?
basketball reasons, that's all I'm gonna say about that lol

just read this BS in the WT
The Mavericks fear Mark Cuban will not be able to get a meeting with Jordan. Tim MacMahon of ESPN reports Jordan won't even take a phone call from Cuban or Chandler Parsons.
The Clippers will stay with Jordan at his house until he signs his new contract.
WTF?????
The Clippers should get fined or punushed for C*** blocking negotiations with a free agent.

Mavs just dodged a bullet with this knucklehead. Will probably be booed everywhere he goes. With his weak mental state, I wonder if he will be able to take it.

Only way Hibbert goes to Dallas is if Cuban gives up a better draft pick.. Uhh they just gave up next years #1 ! There organization is officially in shambles.. I mean their top free agent is coming off a torn Achilles heel.. Plus all free agents are just about taken including Tyson Chandler!
This is terrible for the Mavs and I Love IT!

Same reason Lee isn't ... The league office has to be open to process any trades
