In-depth Scouting Report on Ray McCallum?

He's projected to be our 3rd string PG/SG and I personally don't recall watching him play so I guess if you guys can give me an indepth scouting report, it'll be appreciated.

How would you rate his potential?
How is his shooting? His range?
What are his best assets?
His weaknesses as a PG?
His ballhandling?
His ability to run a P&R?
His defense?
His character?
Courtvision?
What type of an offensive player is he? Attack the rim type?
Any comparison to a player?
How is he as a floor general?
Since he's listed at 6'2'', I'm guessing ideally he's supposed to be a PG, either that's a scoring PG, playmaking PG, or undersized SG. Where do you think he fits best?

McCallum is the type of guy who will come in and execute the coach's game plan without making stupid errors. For the Spurs I expect him to fill in solid minutes during the regular season and most likely get cut out of the rotation during the playoffs i.e. exactly like Corey Joseph. I'd actually compare him to Joseph or Mario Chalmers. My best description for him is that he's not going to take anything off the table but he's also not going to bring much to the table. If I had to guess he's already reached his potential but considering that he's a hardworker he could prove me wrong.

The good:

Good decision maker. Decent defender. Good strength for a PG. Won't turn the ball over. Coaches son so that should tell you about his work ethic and character. Consummate professional. Great demeanor on the court. Will always be busting his ass and giving it his all.

The bad:

Not great in the pick and roll. Indecisive at times i.e. will dribble and waste the shot clock but I doubt he does that playing for the Spurs. Not particularly fast. Not a creative passer. Mediocre handles. Can't break down a defense. Mediocre shooting but he does have range to the 3PT line.

He was a scorer in college and in summer league but never really showed it in the NBA

What are his best assets?
Floor-general type play. Bball IQ. High motor.

His weaknesses as a PG?
Too passive on offense. He runs the offense well but it feels like he's never a threat.

His ballhandling?
Isn't a turnover machine but his handle isn't flashy by any means.

His ability to run a P&R?
Average

His defense?
Motor doesn't run cold on D. He is up for the challenge and can guard some 2's. He's a good defender.

His character?
High character guy.

Courtvision?
Average

What type of an offensive player is he?
ISO jump shot or attacks the rim

Attack the rim type?
Yes, when he actually looks to score

Any comparison to a player?
Can't think of any

How is he as a floor general?
He isn't yet but has that potential as a back up pg

I think he could be a scoring or playmaking guard. It seems like he's stuck in the middle, still needs to develop his game. Spurs can mold him into what they want... You can eliminate undersized SG, he is a PG..


Anyways that's my opinion I'm sure others will have different ones.

Paint by numbers point guard.
He's not going to be a piece of art that will be hung in a museum, but could be attractive enough to post on your refrigerator, or if develops in the right way, might be worth framing and putting up in the hallway.

High character guy. Coaches son and smart enough to learn from those around him. He'll do well in SA with the Basketball braintrust they have over there.

Strengths: Always positive A/TO ratio. Takes very good care of the ball and is very disciplined in running the offense. Perhaps to a fault.

Weaknesses:... are essentially the flip side of his strengths. With the ball in his hands, he's not going to take risks in order to make the play. Perhaps plays too carefully. As a result, it may be harder for him to take his talents as a PG to the next level.

When all is said and done, he's my mom's favorite player. I took the 'rent's to the King's/Laker's game last December and my mom kept going, "Whose number 3? I like him." It was a good game for RMac.

In short, he's an undersized 2-guard with some playmaking ability. Regressed from his rookie season, so it can be safe to assume that his ceiling isn't far off, if he hasn't already hit it. And before anyone blames the dysfunction, B-Mac was able to take leaps in his game, and even Stauskas got better at the tail end of the season. Cousins got All-NBA 2nd team.

High character, works hard and likable though.

He's a perfect player for the Spurs. They know how to get the most out semi-skilled in multiple areas, fairly athletic players who will bust their butt on defense and offense. He knows how to move without the ball and plays hard when defending on the ball.
