|STANIMAL| Reggie Miller: 'Reincarnation Of LeBron James', Larry Bird: 'S-S-SPECTACULAR Player, He's A Man!'

Post#1 » by treefi » Thu Jul 9, 2015 11:00 pm

Stanley Johnson at 18 years old: 6'6.75", 243 lbs, 6'11.5" wingspan
LeBron James at 18 years old: 6'7.25", 245 lbs, 7'0.25" wingspan

In March STANIMAL delivered a ferocious tomahawk dunk after blowing past his defender during a blowout win in the 1st round of the tournament. That prompted Reggie Miller to say this:

Manchild. I’m sorry, I mean, we may be seeing the reincarnation of LeBron James. I mean, LeBron James had this type of body at his age. I mean, He just goes baseline, there’s no help… and obviously the finish and the elevation and the athleticism here by Stanley Johnson.” - Reggie Miller, March 2015

Larry Bird is asked if he'd welcome a shootout with any player in summer league, but says he is too old. Then he starts gushing over STANIMAL, saying he would LOVE to have a chance to play against Stanley Johnson (3:28). They weren't even talking about him, Larry brought it up out of nowhere.

"I wish I was young enough to play against some of these guys. I think Stanley Johnson is a S-S-SPECTACULAR player. You know Stanley is a guy that takes it to the hole, he doesn't jump into guys looking to get fouled. He's a man, he takes it to the basket and tries to finish through 3 people, and I love that about him[/b]." - Larry Bird, July 2015

Lol Reggie with the overreaction. As much as I have been loving what Stanley has been, I don't think it's accurate. The hybrid Paul Pierce/Ron Artest comparison is more apt. I think people forgot what prime Artest was like, he was arguably MVP caliber. He hasn't been a good analyst in a while.

Cool of Bird to comment though. That means more.

Yeah, Reggie Miller still thinks he got that layup off the glass.

I wouldn't put too much stock in what he says. His perception of reality is dubious at best.

I'm not. Obviously this is an overreaction on Miller's part. :)

Still, I felt like this thread had to happen.. and would be a lotta fun.

If you can find any other NBA legends speaking highly of Stanley, please, link us up. This is going to be fun.

I can't believe I'm going to be this wrong about our draft pick. I'm usually dead on, like when I said darko was going to be grea....

I just made myself sad.

Well, given that Tay never really got beyond "good role player" status and the collection of stiffs we've often run out at the three since, being the "best since Grant Hill" really isn't that much of an accomplishment.

He's gonna be really good, though. REALLY good. Might take a year or two, but kid is special.

hes obviously legit. if he works hard enough he could be a superstar. he has the weight, size, strength, style of play, shooting touch, iq, attitude, blah blah blah... skies the limit for him. he has the tools to be a super star. theres no doubt about it.

I think people are getting a little out of control here.

I'm impressed too, but 4 summer league games is hardly enough to draw this kind of broad and extreme conclusion about a player. Any player, really. Its a low sample size, and its also the wrong sample size.

And you've been wrong before. I remember you singing the praises of the Josh Smith signing.

Well, hopefully Stanimal IS the best since Hill. The kid is special. Whether or not he ever reaches that level of play(the potential is there), the possibility alone of him being the best since Hill, is something to be excited about.

... and hopefully Abdullah is the best since Barry! 8-)

I just admitted I was wrong about darko! What do you want from me!

Damn it man! I was wrong about smith, and it became apparent almost immediately!

Now I'm really sad!

I'm sure we are, I agree.. but the interesting part of it all is that it's not just Detroit fans who are hyping Stanley like he's going to be a future All-Star. It's already started, and it won't be long until he's a regular on ESPN if what we've seen in summer league is at all an accurate representation of what he will bring to the table every game.

When I seen his college highlights, Lebron is actually the first thing that came to mind, it might just of been because of his size, not sure. I was going to put the comparison in the Draft thread, but didn't want the backlash. I don't see it as a horrible one, just not as athletic as Bron really, that is a big deal tho
