Grade our Offseason

Its still only July but we have around 90 percent of our team in place. We have had ups and downs since the draft lottery and would like to get your opinion on how we did the offseason.

For me, Id grade from the bottom. An F would be given if we lost our pick to the sixers and managed to bring back the old gang.

By virtue of keeping the pick and not resigning last year's team, I would think we would at least be a C. Based on whp we added, Id give us a B+ for Bass, B for Hibbert and C+ for Williams. We have also managed to keep our room exceptiom to add more depth.

Overall, Id say we should score at least a B. Honestly, we only looked bad because of failing with LMA and DaJ. Should we be penalized for reaching for the stars? We managed to improve our front line and improve our bench.

I'd give it a B. I'll bump it up to a B+ if we trade Young and replace him with a defensive wing.

Right now? As it stands, a solid B-.

Hibbert could turn out to be really good after a change of scenery.
Bass and Williams are good acquisitions.
Russell and Nance Jr. will be exciting.

This is a HUGE talent upgrade over Smush, Walton, Turiaf, and Kwame.

Id give it a C right now. Hibbert, Williams and Bass were good veteran additions. But throwing everything at Aldridge to start really hurt us from the start. I think if we would of focused on other pieces from the start it could of been a little better. I was a fan of our draft too. Id like to see the Lakers move Kelly and possibly Young. I still think we need a back up point guard someone that can set up the offense like Kendall Marshall. We also need a wing player and I think someone like Dorell Wright with our room exception would be a great addition. Bringing in a center prospect like Upshaw and slowly develop like Scott did last year with Clarkson would help. Making these moves would bring my grade up to a B or B+ depending if players develop.

Draft: A+
- Choosing Russell was bold, but we couldn't lose as this draft was 3 deep with elite star potential.
- Selecting Nance in the 1st round was a surprise, depending on if you felt he would've been available at #34, but he will be a great role player and will compliment the team very well.
- Getting Anthony Brown out of Stanford was a safe, smart pick. A shooter with decent shot selection, and better size, is a good pick at the top of the 2nd round. His activity on the boards will be much appreciated.

Signing Star FA: F
- Struck out on the top 3 offseason targets. That's the reality of the situation.

Trading for Roy Hibbert: B-
- Hibbert is a bit of a slug, so it'll be interesting to see if he'll be able to keep up with Randle and Clarkson. He's a great fit for Kobe though and I imagine he'll get spoon fed the ball at the rim alot if he decides to not camp out near the elbows. Defensively, he's what this team has lacked since Howard.

Signing Brandon Bass: B
- Complimentary veteran who will solidify the PF rotation along with Randle and Nance. His leadership will be counted on and his work ethic will be exemplary.

Signing Lou Williams: C-
- Scorer off the bench who will give the Lakers another shot in the arm offensively if Nick Young and Kobe continue with their shooting struggles. He can create his own shot and get to the FT line. Respected by players around the league, not so much by FO types. He'll be a good player to have to get FA down the line.

I still think we bring in some more players and continue to find a new home for Kelly, Sacre, and Young. I would like to see if we can get a veteran defensive wing, a true backup PG, and a veteran backup C.

Free agency was a mess. Not only did we strike out on the superstars we missed out on mid tier free agents who we should have been locks to pick up. Front office couldn't decide what they wanted to do. Picked up Sacre's option only to try to move him for cap room later(really brilliant). Traded an asset for Hibbert when we should have been getting an asset back, but not a huge deal. Williams and Bass are good signings on a playoff team, but on a rebuilding team I have to wonder if they'll make any difference. Would have preferred to just go younger with our free agent signings. Draft was great although picking Nance in the 1st made no sense. I would have rather just used the pick to move Nick Young. In the end I fail to see how we've shown improvement that will move next year's crop of free agents.

Depending on if we move Swaggy and if we sign anyone else I'd move us to somewhere between a B- and a B.

Just the fact that all the "Doomsday" threads seem to have died out is a good sign lol

spot on. same grades for me as well. i think it pretty much averages out to a B to B- still a pretty solid offseason for us. there should be 1 more roster spot left... if we can unload kelly and sacre at least even better... but until then i think we should hold out to claim someone off waivers or if upshaw really impresses. but really though. just being able to finally shed our dead weight for actual nba players is exciting.

START OF FREE AGENCY: F

We swung for the fences and struck out. Not only that, our reputation was pummeled and we became the proverbial punching bag for the entire media. Whether we like it or not, perception is truth in this league.

AFTER WE WHIFFED: A

From my perspective, the acquisitions of Roy Hibbert, Lou Williams and Brandon Bass were all exceptionally underrated moves for very good under market players that fit perfectly within our team and... UNPOPULAR OPINION ALERT... will actually help this team win more games than just Lamarcus Aldridge alone could have.

OVERALL GRADE: C

In true Laker fashion, it was a roller coaster of drama... we ended up with a good team... my only regret for not getting Lamarcus is that it will make getting Kevin Durant even harder. So no harm there.

But let's be honest here... if you asked each and every one of us where our excitement is for this upcoming season... the answer would be simple:

There is two parts, draft B, still not too convinced with Nance Jr but Russell was the right call, as was Brown, and Upshaw could be our own Hassan Whiteside (provided he makes our squad)

F.A - C

we missed out on all the big targets, we did ok to recover i guess but overall it wasn't a good F.A, great recovery towards the end where we got Lou Williams and Bass, not to mention Hibbert was almost like a F.A signing since we got him for nothing, but overall he's just a piece we are hoping succeeds, we're basically having a bucks kind of year (hoping we get that 8th seed or barely miss)

For me the biggest question will be if Okafor or Russell are about equal or if one is WAY better than the other. That will ultimately decide what type of offseason we had. Assuming those two players both live up to their potential, I'd say we had a solid B off season.

As good as can be expected. It wasn't reasonable to expect big acquisitions when the Lakers have no one to play with. With Louis Williams and Brandon Bass signed for a few years and possibly Hibbert, the Lakers might be in a better position next year if the draft picks have developed enough. Honestly though I think the Lakers went fishing knowing that they would come up empty and felt they had no choice so that fans wouldn't dump their season tickets.

B. Because I had my expectations low on DJ, LMA and actually wanted to round out the roster with solid role-players and players like Lou who can score. Hibbert trade was pleasant surprise and Bass is really good all-around backup for those 20-ish minutes. Lou is a bit eh since we didn't move Young because they are essentially same player. I really, really like our draft picks and that brings the grade up. I'd say Mitch did good job not waiting on LMA/DJ and was proactive with Hibbert trade who's a beast defensively and can hit that 15 footer.
