Josh Smith Vs. Deron Williams

Post#1 » by GreekAlex » Sat Jul 11, 2015 2:06 am

I just read with the Nets buyout of D. Williams they will use the stretch provision.

I was under the impression that if you bought out a player you could not use the stretch provision.

Why were the Pistions not able to get J. Smith to agree to a buyout of at least the difference of what he'd make from another team? :banghead:

Detroit is using the stretch provision on Smiths contract.
That's why we have the 5 or so mil against our cap for the next few years.

Yeah cap-wise the stretch provision is better for us than a buyout.

What the OP is saying is that Brooklyn and Williams agreed to a buyout but the Nets are also stretching that ~$27 million against their cap.

It takes two to tango though. I would be stunned if the front office didn't approach Smith with a buyout offer first, but it's not like he had any reason to agree to it. From everything I've read it didn't seem like Josh was itching to get out of Detroit as opposed to Williams who wanted to be released from the Nets. With the deal Deron is reportedly getting from Dallas it makes up most of the money he lost in the buyout agreement. Different situations, and the timing is far better for Williams than it was for Smith.
