Clearly, they weren't impressed with sending guys to the Ft. Wayne Ants.

Nope, that's not what a hybrid arrangement is.

Nine teams (Bakersfield, Erie, Idaho, Iowa, Grand Rapids, Maine Red Claws, Reno Bighorns, Rio Grande Valley Vipers and Sioux Falls Skyforce) are operated under a “hybrid” affiliation, whereby the NBA team manages and funds the basketball operations while local ownership maintains control of the business and community relations aspects of the team.

I can accept that, but it's difficult to determine based on the tweet if the term under the technical definition that you've raised is how the term was intended when Bud spoke of it:

I've been advocating Louisville, KY. It's a huge market in a basketball state. The city already has massive support for the collegiate team there. One hour flight to ATL. A looong bus ride to other affiliates.

From a business standpoint, it'd be a perfect fit.

Hardwood Paroxysm did a feature last year on potential locations:

Louisville, Kentucky

Background: There’s a notable amount of speculation that Louisville could one day become home to an NBA franchise– this Facebook page promoting the idea has over 11,000 likes. In 2012, the Louisville Cardinals were labeled the most valuable NCAA basketball team, proving that this city adores basketball

Arena: The KFC Yum! Center seats over 22,000 and is home to the Cardinals mens’ and womens’ basketball programs.

Proximity: Louisville is geographically friendly, too. It’s a three-and-a-half hour drive to Fort Wayne, five hours to Canton, eight-and-a-half hours to Des Moines, and Louisville is 10-and-a-half hours away from Oklahoma City.

A couple of behind the scenes items re: Louisville and the YUM! Center:

- The university was given total control of arena scheduling. That means Pitino and the AD, who both have fought against sharing anything NBA related will not be welcome to a proposal. Remember when Charlotte was considering Louisville when the Hornets were moving? UL put up a roadblock to prevent it becoming a reality.

- That city would definitely be able to support the NBDL.

The facility being discussed for 8 figure upgrades is Freedom Hall @ Kentucky State Fair in Louisville. This is the arena that UL had played in prior to its new facility.

This seems like a better fit, and will put 25 home games in the facility and provide jobs for locals to keep this open more often.
They are currently looking for new events to come to the city and justify their continuing need to upgrade.
Seating is set for basketball at approximately 18K when it was being used for basketball. The schedule appears to be light on major concerts events, so seems like this is a more doable option.

NOTE: Average 2014 attendance at NBDL games:
358 events / 931,928 official total @ 2,725 per game.

Almost any arena can handle the event.........Gwinnett Center would be a good fit as well.

I'm reading where there is talk of even more NBDL expansion, and lots of opinions on the matter.

http://dleaguedigest.com/2015/05/04/where-will-nba-d-league-expansion-head-next/

"But a revival is likely in the works. In an interview at the end of the 2013-14 season, former president Reed mentioned there was a waiting list of teams interested in joining the fold, including the Atlanta Hawks.
Those plans were put on hold temporarily as the team was put up for sale in early January of this year. With the transfer of the team to new ownership all but official, the Hawks are again determined to join the D-League."

Sounds like its becoming a realistic opportunity. I'd rather see it in North Atlanta though, similar to the Gwinnett Braves.

...The return/investment just doesn't seem worth it and given the number of DLeague teams that have already folded in the past it doesn't seem as if the league could support a larger amount of franchises either.

MaceCase wrote:And again there is a large difference from purchasing an already existing entity and building from the ground up an entirely new one, the exact issue I directly addressed....as that is the only remaining course of action for at minimum 12 teams who might like to have their own DLEague team......seeing as all but one has been gobbled up.

...How feasible or desirable is that course for the 13 remaining NBA franchises... Rather unlikely considering the rate of return on their investment and the already existent access to a multitude of other, cheaper resources such as other teams DLeague players.

I said I'd update if there was any change on the issue: And it looks like Hawks are FINALLY putting greater emphasis into acquiring our own D-League franchise.

The Hawks announced changes to their executive management team on Tuesday with the moving of Andrew Steinberg to a newly created position of Executive Vice President and Chief Business Officer.

Steinberg previously served as the Chief Revenue Officer. In his new position, he will take on a leadership role in the execution of several strategic projects. Those projects include a new practice facility, reimaging of Philips Arena and pursuing an NBA Development League franchise as a Hawks affiliate.
HERE

You guys think we're buying and relocating the Fort Wayne Mad Ants? Or creating a new franchise altogether from scratch?
Any thoughts on where this franchise might be located?!? I'm hoping for Louisville, but based on distance/market it's unlikely our team sets up there.

You don't seem all that invested in this topic if you missed the fact that Indiana bought the Mad Ants. The Hawks and 10 other teams will not have a DLeague affiliate in 2015/16.

LOL You got me there. I'll put more focus into updating the anticipated, widespread expansion of the D-League.

The Hawks are without an NBA Development League affiliate.

So are 10 other NBA teams.

With the official announcement that the Pacers had purchased the Fort Wayne Mad Ants Wednesday, all 19 franchises in the D-League are singly-affiliated with an NBA team.
Here

Seems like a great opportunity to expand the D-League.

We're clearly headed for some expansion in the Developmental League moving forward. And rightfully so, this is a great tool I think we can (and should) fully utilize moving forward.

Yay, selective quoting will still show prescience....

Half a decade later

I hope Jared Cunningham and John Jenkins will be happy to finally realize their great NBA potential.

God, I love you Mace.

I may be one of God's mistakes, but you are undoubtedly one of his blessings. And You are truly one of a kind, my friend. :)

For what it's worth. I was flat out wrong about JJ2. No excuses. No caveats. I have 0 problem being held accountable for things I've said. That's kind of the point of the message boards. And why the archives go back nearly a decade.
