Love his energy, seems like a hard worker, could turn into a Draymond/Shawn Marion Type

kind of see him as more of a tony allen type myself but he's got to develop a shot first. gonna take him a long, long time and a whole lot of work though.

Glad that we signed him. I had a feeling we would, just wasn't sure when. Hopefully he can give us some good minutes off the bench this season.
I've been an LA Clipper fan since 1998 and that will never change. I hate our new logo and jerseys!

yeoman.

this team needs a physical bruiser who is hungry for a spot and a bigger pay day.
Pulling for you Branden.

but…leave the friendship with Draymond off the court.

I like his attitude. We don't need him to be a good shooter right away. We need him to be a high energy spark plug off the bench. Throw a few hard fouls, grab some boards, play hard D, and try for the occasional offensive put back or alleyoop.

Player Comparison and Development

Post#9 » by Ranma » Thu Jul 16, 2015 2:39 am

There seems to be a tendency to give in to the temptation of comparing Branden Dawson to Draymond Green while forgetting that Green is a unique talent in the NBA. They both came from Michigan State and have similar size and high-energy styles, but I have yet to see any expert analyst compare the two; in fact, most analysts I've come across go out of their way to discount the comparison between the two.

I agree in hoping Dawson will eventually develop into a Tony Allen or at least start off as a Quinton Ross type of player with more upside but as a 3/4 tweener instead of a 2/3 one. The concern is that he's had injury issues and has been noted for his lack of lateral quickness. I believe he also tested low in agility at the draft combine. Further, while he plays with a high-energy motor, he's had issues with consistency in effort and focus early in his time as a Spartan. Coach Tom Izzo and even Green himself helped mentor him through those struggles.

Of course, it is great to have this type of hungry and athletic player on the roster who is willing to learn and open to playing whatever role is required of him. The key will be how the Clippers develop these types of players. Doc has preferred to have ready-made players on the roster even to the point of getting over-the-hill vets. If he wants to emulate the San Antonio model as he claims, he and the coaching staff have to do a better job in this area. The other more stable Los Angeles sports organizations--the L.A. Kings and Dodgers--have put a priority on developing talent as well as acquiring it in their respective turnarounds...much like the Spurs.

Dawson On Signing: “This Is Just The Beginning”

Image

The pen Branden Dawson used to put ink to paper at a hotel in Las Vegas early this week, making his contract official with the Clippers, is still in his possession.

He wanted a keepsake to remember what he described as an “unbelievable” moment for him, so he held onto the memento to keep that memory close.

Consider it a souvenir from one of the most significant days of his life.

“It’s just the little things that matter,” Dawson said. “I’m never going to forget about this day. I’m definitely going to mark it down in my calendar – July 14, 2015. This is just the beginning.”

Brendan O’Connor, who served as the Clippers’ head coach during Summer League play, said he initially wanted to take Dawson along slower. But the rookie deserved the time he was getting.

“It was time, and he proved us right,” O’Connor said.

“Just going out there and making the little plays, I think that’s what they needed,” Dawson said. “They needed that guy willing to do whatever it takes to be on the floor and make our team excel.”

Dawson and Green are nothing alike. I agree with you Ranma.
Plus, why would I want to go to the NBA? Duke players suck in the pros.

Not sure what the problem is…?

To the extent anybody is hoping he's just flat-out Draymond Green, that's ludicrous.

To the extent that one may just hope that a draftee with relatively the same height, weight, strength, ability to rebound, body up 4s and similar foot dexterity on the perimeter can use some of those qualities to be a plus defender for our team like Draymond does (although Draymond has turned out to be a great defender)….i don't see the problem.

I think the only people that have made some comparisons between the two were those media analysts. I think the only similarities between them are the school, being hard working/hustle/high-energy players, undersized/tweeners, and being drafted in the second round.

Dawson looks to be a lot more athletic and ripped while Green's built more like Zach Randolph. Dawson also has a long ways to go on the offensive end. I just hope he gets consistent minutes, even if it's only 5-10 minutes a night. I hope he doesn't get the Udoh treatment, who I never saw play.

From an MSU fan who watched the entire career of both players:

Dawson is way way more athletic than Dray and probably a better rebounder. Well, Dawson is a better offensive rebounder and they're close to even rebounding defensively. As far as defenders, Dawson was always super inconsistent as a defender in college. Lots of gambling for steals or falling asleep for backdoor cuts. But when he was focused, he really got after it defensively. I think that now that he knows he's gonna have to be the hustle guy to earn his minutes in the league, he will hopefully improve his focus and become a plus defender. Dray really wasn't all that defensively in college(Dawson might've been better), that's why it's so crazy how he has developed into an elite one like this.

Offensively Draymond was pretty much better than Dawson at everything besides dunking. Dawson's ball skills have always left a lot to be desired, his handle is VERY loose and he never could develop even a dependable mid range jump shot. Not gonna lie, I'll be pleasantly surprised if he develops a jumper. Draymond came into college as a great passer and slowly developed a reliable jumper as he moved through college.

So yeah, they're not really all that similar, besides being similar sized tweener/small ball 4s from the same college.

Good signing.

He looks like the Enforcer.

Dawson
Wesley Johnson
Pierce needs to Limit Minutes so that in a close game he can still nail the Three.
J. Smith Helps out at the 4 and can compete in Playoffs.
Keeping Jordan
A. Rivers

Looks like a real good off season and the Clippers look to really compete this coming season.

Ownership is the Key to winning

The Clippers seem to have their hands tied but did a good job to upgrade the team
and the future with Balmer looks good.
