Ty Lawson Generating Interest From The Lakers, Rockets, Pistons & Kings

Post#1 » by Risk101 » Fri Jul 17, 2015 6:23 am

LAS VEGAS—Despite a second DUI arrest in the last six months, embattled Denver Nuggets guard Ty Lawson is generating interest on the trade market, NBA sources told SI.com. Houston, Detroit and the L.A. Lakers are among the teams that have expressed interest in Lawson recently, and there remains a strong possibility the Nuggets could unload Lawson before training camp.

Lawson, 27, was arrested in Los Angeles on Tuesday after police pulled him over for speeding on the Hollywood Freeway. Last January, Lawson was arrested in Denver on suspicion of driving under the influence. He is due to appear in a Denver court on Friday for a hearing in connection with the January arrest.

While Lawson’s off-court problems have raised red flags, teams remain intrigued by his talent. Last season, Lawson averaged 15.2 points per game in 75 games with the Nuggets. His 9.6 assists per game was good for third in the NBA—the second straight season he finished in the top three in the category. And with this summer’s exploding salaries—five years, $80 million for Detroit’s Reggie Jackson; four-years, $70 million for Dallas’s Wesley Matthews—the two years, $25 million Lawson has left on his contract is a reasonable number.

The presence of Emmanuel Mudiay—the 6’5”, 200-pound former high school phenom who has emerged as one of the breakout stars of the Las Vegas summer league—has made Lawson largely expendable in Denver. Despite playing just 12 games for the Guangdong Southern Tigers last season, Mudiay, 19, has looked like a polished pro in Vegas and is poised to be the centerpiece of Denver’s rebuilding effort.

One team that could work its way into the mix for Lawson: Sacramento. The Kings are coached by ex-Nuggets coach George Karl, who despite the recent signing of Rajon Rondo would welcome a reunion with his former player, per a league source.

The only logical reason I can think for the Pistons showing interest is to buy low and sell high after he regains value throughout the season. They already have Jackson with Jennings coming off the bench and also just traded for Steve Blake to compete for the 3rd string PG spot with Spencer Dinwiddie. I can't possible see why they would want him for basketball reasons.

Solid PG who averages 15/10 and is on a reasonable contract. I would wait to verify he won't serve any jail time for the 2 DUIs. Looks like he can be had cheaply. If there was any truth to the rumor that the Nuggets were evaluating waiving him, they would probably accept an expiring and 2nd.

If I was the Nuggets I wouldn't be overly eager to trade him based on how low his value is. I would wait until the season starts, let him put up some numbers, and they and get a 1st. His value really can't get any worse so i'm not sure what the rush is unless the Nuggets truly believe he will create locker room issues.

I would have (with hesitation) done a Capela + Filler for Ty Lawson pre market crash. I have no idea what's fair value now.

Being in the Denver market I've seen plenty of Nugget games w/ Lawson. He's the definition of jeckel/hyde player.

i'm thinking ty once he gets a bit older will not be a club goer tryin be juggin in front of chicks with his hot whip. this whole experience will change him as it would with any reasonable human. this is very very fixable, and the upside is enormous for a limited time ( limited as in you must get him in his athletic prime whch is ending soon) . somebody gotta pounce

I'm guessing the Kings interest is from before they signed Rondo, and the Pistons interest is from before they resigned Jackson. So the real interest is the Lakers and Rockets, with the Rockets the most realistic option I'd think. Both in terms of fit, and in terms of assets the Nuggets could get back.

I doubt the Pistons interest is from before they resigned Jackson. Jackson resigning with the Pistons was a done dealing from the beginning.

Lakers also dont make sense to me with Clarkson and Russell. Give those young guys all possible minutes why screw them over Lawson. If it was a legit star they could get then I'd understand but its not worth it for Lawson. Its not like he would push them into the playoffs.

Wasn't his second DUI just this week or last? In the article it says "Despite a second DUI arrest".

Ouch. You think Jennings is better than Jackson?
