Ehh..he's an elite offensive player and rebounder that along gives him lots of value.
He's only 23 with plenty of time to work on his D and a coach with plenty of options to mask it.

Of the signings this year, I think D.Carroll and R.Jackson have potential to be pretty bad...especially Carroll at his age and outside of Atlanta's system.

Kanter is a player with 1/2 a game, offense. He's not worth $17-18 million a year. If he improves as you point out then maybe. I'd only offer him $10 million right now.

Of the new contracts Carroll could be a massive disaster fot the Raps, and Wes Matthews for the Mavs. Reggie Jackson with either become a great pg or be a salary cap anchor.

He is also a top notch rebounder, which is part of D as it limits second chance points.

Surprised at some of the responses but my winner is Reggie Jackson.

Not only is he gonna be avg 17.5mil per year but DET stuck with him for the next 5 years. Reggie might be in the Top 5 of highest paid PG across the league for at least the next 3 years. That's just wrong for roughly 44FG% & 33% 3PT even if he's gonna avg 18-10ast.
Come at the king, you best not miss...

Right now I'll join the echo chamber and say Pekovic, but Matthews has a good chance of holding the belt for 2-3 years if his recovery from that Achilles tear doesn't go well.

I would rather have Frye and his 3 yr/24 mil than the following contracts..

- Mathhews
- Pek
- Landry
- Thompson
- Varejo
- Jackson
- Carroll
- Carmelo
- Kobe
- Hibbert
- Young
- Kanter
- Burks

The new contracts make the old ones look better.

Expiring: Gordon, Wallace, JJohnson, Kobe

non-expiring: Pek, Frye, CLandry

Then you have a lot of these new contracts - some of them could be reallllllly bad.

I looked down the list of contracts expecting to find several that absolutely stood out. Ignoring expiring contracts I found a bunch that I feel are overpaid, but nothing like Joe Johnson when he got that. Closest for me is probably Bosh with 4/98 left. I think they're about the same level of player and neither of them are worth that kind of extreme contract to me. But even that if it turns out being bad probably won't be a train wreck with the cap going up.

Older contracts:

Pek
Varejao

New Contracts (based on a variety of things):

Matthews: no one has really recovered from this injury)
Kanter: black hole on offense, horrible defender. the new Al Jefferson ie. has limited utility in today's NBA. the only way this contract makes any sense (in my mind) is if it's to show KD they are willing to spend money

Homer pick:

Corey Jospeh: the numbers aren't staggering but you can find a backup point for cheap almost every year. are they planning on trading Lowry in the near future? that's really the only way this makes sense. they just drafted a pg too (a 4 year senior aka should be ready to play)

Also an honorable mention to Derrick Williams. Only 2 years and 5 mil, but has a PO on it and he was likely only getting slightly above minimum deals elsewhere.

Williams is actually 2 years and 8+ million. So, it is even worse if you already thought it was bad.

I meant 5 mil a year as I've seen it reported as 10 mil over 2 years.

It's not like it's an immovable contract or burdensome, but just bad all around imo.

We agree on the "badness" level of the contract.

I can confirm the numbers are:

2015-2016 - $4,400,000.00
2016-2017 - $4,598,000.00 - Player Option

worst contract in the league now

I was going to mention Matthews, see that several others have brought him up. All considered, I'd have to say Pekovic, Matthews, and Kanter (brought him up earlier), probably in that order.

Strongly disagree on Kanter. I think it's silly to entertain given his elite post skills and rebounding and the fact that he's 23.

Landry will be out for the beginning of the regular season and probably more, so he's definitely among the league's worst

Dallas might have another that qualifies: Chandler Parsons
15 points, 5 rebounds, and a good shooting percentage makes him look decent.
Major knee surgery = even worse defense.

$15.3 mil this year and $16 the next - which is a player option.
25% trade kicker

He might deserve 9 or even 10 mil - if he is healthy. Not $15 and $16.

I know why you all are putting people who make money near the mid level (Derrick Williams, Carl Landry, etc) on the list, but I really can't call any of those contracts the worst. With the cap exploding and the stretch rule, you can just waive they guys and not really have to worry about their salary anymore...

For my money, Pekovic has to be the worst.

Scoot McGroot wrote:Pekovic. Then, I'd throw Varejao and Landry in there just ahead of Frye. Otherwise, we will have to see how some of these new contracts work out, otherwise, we'll have some new ones. Maybe Wes Matthews and Demarre Carroll if they don't click/work out.

Andy's last year isn't guaranteed and he's actually managed to stay healthy when we've brought him off the bench. What makes it a bad contract is that he was extended unnecessarily before his injury. If TT ends up playing on the QO this season and leaves after that, we'll be happy to have AV (assuming he can stay healthy coming off the bench).
