According to Zach Lowe The NBA has temporarily forbid the Pacers from reaching a contract agreement with guard Monta Ellis, reports Grantland.com.

Despite the stoppage, the Pacers are still expected to sign Ellis, but the team must reorder its transactions in order to fit him under the salary cap.

Once the cap has been cleared, Ellis is expected to sign a four-year, $44 million contract with an opt-out after three seasons.

How did this happen? Does this mean that they have to restructure or release someone?

Just saw this. David West just officially signed with the Spurs on Friday. I would damn near assume that we didn't renounce him and just assumed that he had already signed with the Spurs, which immediately would have cleared his cap hold. Until he was either renounced or signed a new contract elsewhere, he counted a huge amount against our cap.

Makes sense. One would think that his cap-hold would be released immediately after an opt-out.

And that's a weird CBA quirk. Cap holds exist until a player signs elsewhere, officially retires, or is renounced. Weird, huh. Before we signed David West 4 years ago, we had to renounce Lasalle Thompson because his cap hold was still on the books.

That is weird. Lasalle Thompson hasnt been a Pacer or even in the league since the late 90's. Real weird system.

It's like when you play a complex board game and you did stuff out of order, but it wouldn't have changed the outcome of that turn, but someone has to call you out on it...

It's really common, it's just getting reported this time because of the relative name recognition of Monta Ellis and the fact that there's nothing else to report.
