Dedmon over Fournier, because we need at least one big guy that can play some D and we know he can give you at least 15 to 20 good minutes.

I'm fine with you wanting keep Dedmon, but why Watson over Fournier? I mean Fournier is 22 and Watson is 31. Fournier has a lot of upside, and while I think Watson is a very good back up Point Guard, he's also on the wrong side of 30. Even if you didn't want Fournier on this team long term, and I'm not sure why you wouldn't, I would still hold on to him because I would assume his trade value is much higher than Watson's due to the age as well.

Watson is one of the better backup PG's in the game and we're already stacked with young talent at Evan's position. That's about it really. I don't care about C.J's age if the goal is to win now.

Vuc
Dipo
Gordon
Payton
Hezonja
Fournier
Harris
Nichloson

Not sure if you need to protect Harris because an expansion team with cap limitations likely wont grab him anyway but Watson/Smith/Marble/Harvey/new guy/Dedmon/Frye are not worth the risk.

People would actually give up fournier to protect DD, I guess Dedmon is going to be this year's overrated scrub with potential on the board after Harkless was let go.

nicholson hasn't done jack ****. frye has proven how valuable he is to a team. did he do it last season? nope. doesn't mean he can't with a better coach/system, better chemistry, and a better overall team.

I agree, I think Frye is a lot better than he gets credit for, but with his age and contract there is no chance an expansion team will grab him, even if they did that would give us another 8 million to spend next year.

All things being equal though, I would take Frye over Nicholson for next year.

No reason to protect Frye, he's staying on the team even after the expansion draft.

Orlando would probably trade with the expansion team to pick Frye. In the past a 2nd round pick has been enough to encourage the expansion to choose in such a way.

Another thought: just because Orlando protect 8 players does not mean it loses 7. Only one player would be selected away. Nicholson seems safe to not be selected.

Protected

PG: Elfrid Payton
SG: Victor Oladipo
SF: Tobias Harris
PF: Aaron Gordon
C: Nikola Vucevic

Others

SF/SG: Mario Hezonja
SG: Evan Fournier
C/PF: Dwayne Dedmon

Unprotected

PG: C.J. Watson
PF: Channing Frye
PF: Jason Smith
SF: Devyn Marble
PF: Andrew Nicholson
SG: Tyler Harvey
PG: Keith Appling

I would not want to lose Watson but The Magic would be fine otherwise. One of the bottom four would likely be selected unless some team an expansion team to pick Frye for them.

For the record, I think we will see Expansion within the next 5 years.

It was either Frye or Watson and having a big that can shoot was more valuable to me than a backup point when our guards are our strongpoint. Frye wasn't very good last year, but he is a veteran who has proven himself. DD is showing strong progress but we'll see where he's at after this year.

Agree. Keeping Frye as the 8th man isn't all that farfetched. Having a 6'11" guy who can stretch the floor from the 4 or 5 spot is invaluable to most teams, especially one with a core group of players who struggle to shoot. Yes, he's a liability on defense and the boards, but in spot situations he can still be a matchup nightmare. Plus, at $7-8 mill/year, his deal is steal now. He could prove to be a handy trade chip down the road.
