Yeah Im not expecting much from Larkin. I am however a big Jack fan.

May I ask why aside from the usual heart and hustle stuff argument? What is their to love about Jack?

Because he doesnt settle for his shot. Jack does a good job of beating his guy 1 on 1 and breaking the defense. He is one of the best people in the NBA going 1 on 1 as seen by his high rankings on ISO plays. He is very good at taking bad shots. That sounds strange but most defenses will give you the long 2. Jack shot 45.5% on shots greater then 16 ft but less then 3 last season so he makes defenses play different then they normally do. Double teams come early vs Jack to try and take that shot away from him and it opens up the offensive glass if he does miss.

Jack is also a good three point shooter. He shot poorly last season but even that is misleading. For one, he took 14 heave 3pters. These are 3s that 30 ft or greater. One of the things that drove me crazy about DWIll was he didnt try the buzzer beater shots because they would count against his %. To prove my point, DWIll only took 5 shots greater then 30 ft.

The other thing you have to look at with Jack's 3pt shooting is where is he taking them from. Jack lead the team in 3pt% from the corner last season 46.5%. He shot 42.1% and 44.1% from the corner the previous 2 seasons so it's not a fluke. If you analyze the upgrades we made with Bargs and Ellington you can see how we can scheme Jack, and the team, into a higher 3pt%.

- Ellington shot 38.6% on above the break 3s last season.
- Anderson only hit 31.5% on above the break 3s but 42.3% on corner 3s.

- Mirza only shot 29.9% on above the break 3s last year.
- Bargnani shot 36.6% on above the break 3s.

- Joe Johnson shot 37.4% on above the break 3s.

If we switch Jack into Anderson's corner 3 role (46.5% vs 42.3%), have Johnson and Bargnani run PnR (36.6% & 37.4% above the break) and put Ellington on the other 3pt break (38.6%) we will putting the players in the best position to succeed.

The main thing that resonates from Jack is leadership. He sacrifices his own stats for the greater good of the team and its quite obvious that the players respect the hell out of him for it. We needed him to shoot from the top of the key last year and he did despite it not being a strength of his. DWIll never did that. He launches up buzzer beaters with no regard to what his shooting % will be. Once again, DWill would always hold the ball long enough so the shot wouldnt count. Jack is the first person cheering when he is on the bench, says and does all the right things off the court and puts time in with the young guys to help them develop. His ISO skills are extremely important in close games when we sit on the lead. Jack allows us to run the clock down while also getting a good shot. This is why he had so many game winners this year, you can trust him to make high pressure shots in big moments. We have been spoiled the last few years because JJ was great at this but he clearly passed the torch to Jack in that respect. PG is similar to QB in many respects. You have guys like Lawson who put up stats but dont win similar to Jay Cutler and you have guys like Jack who bring intangibles like leadership, maturity and positivity to the table like a Russell Wilson. This is his first real shot at a team of his own and I think he is going to do well with it.

Yeah he supposedly gained 20+ pounds this off season. If so he is definitely making the roster.

Miller blowing his knee out 4 years ago might be the best thing that ever happened to the Nets as bad as that might sound. Coming out of HS he was one of the top prospects in the country. He still went on to have a productive freshman year at Baylor before entering the NBA. Even if he never blew his knee out, he would not have been ready to play in the NBA until now since he is rail skinny. His body is finally catching up with his skill level. Among other players his age he was able to dominate in the D- League but he still hasnt been able to transition that success to the NBA. He is best utilized as a face up PF but simply didnt have enough size. If he did gain 20 pounds like reported then look out.

The Nets are obviously trying to find a fallen angel as they have been termed. T-Rob, Q Miller, Bargnani and Larkin would all fit that description. It reminds me of how the Pistons built their championship team by hitting on Billups, Ben Wallace and RIp Hamilton. Detroit was Billups 5th NBA team in 5 years and he only had minimal success in his 3rd and 4th season with the Wolves. Detroit was Wallace's 3rd team after going undrafted. Hamilton was known as being MJs lacky before getting to Detroit. Detroit isnt the 1st team to take this approach but they proof that you can build a team with this approach. I would be happy if just one of these guys breaks out since we already have Lopez, RHJ, Bogs and Young to build around.

Jack taking long 2s doesn't make the defense play differently at all. They're very happy to concede those shots to Jack all night.

For example, even if he shot 50% on those long 2s (which is absolutely ridiculous, that's Dirk Nowitzki territory)...that's still only a 50% TS. Defenses are happy to give that up, especially when you consider that he doesn't shoot 50% from that range. League average TS% is like 54% or so.

Jack is a better 3pt shooter than he showed last year, but he's still not who I would consider a great outside shooter. He takes ill-advised shots, he commits really bad TOs, and he's a bad defender. He's a scoring guard off the bench, that's his optimal role. A lesser Jamal Crawford really. I don't see what's to love about players like that.

How is Ellington defensively? Someone on "the blog" was trying to use stats to lay claim that the guy is a "3 and D" player. I know he can shoot but I've never known him to be a defensive guard.

Jack was a better PG then DWill last year.

Here are there per 48 at the PG position per 82games.com

Jack
16.2 PER
21.9 Pts
47.1% eFG
9.2 Assits
4.6 TO
5.3 Reb

DWill
15.9 PER
20.1 Pts
44.4% eFG
10.2 Assists
3.5 TO
5.4 Reb

Jack's Opponent
13.1 PER
18.3 Pts
44.1% eFG
9.1 Assists
3.2 TO
5.7 Reb

DWill's Opponent
14.9 PER
19.4 Pts
48.6% eFG
8.6 Assists
3.8 TO
6.2 Reb

People love to throw out +/- to say DWill was better but 80% of that stat is who you play with and not what you do. Jack outplayed his opponent by a greater difference. If you put 5 guys on the floor who outplay their opponent then you will win.

When Jack has to play SG is when he played poorly which shouldnt shock anyone since that was when he played with DWill. The DWill/Jack pairing simply didnt work.

D-Will was garbage last year, I swear some people were watching another player out there than I was dude. Passive play, lots of bricked shots. He quit on this team so many times last year and the years before I've lost count!!!

If D-Will so was much more awesome than Jack, which he wasn't, he would have never gotten benched or lost his starting job. You think Hollins is that much of an ass hole to bench Williams if the guy was actually doing his job? No!!! Williams played like **** the entire year outside of the first month of the season. Of course Jack's numbers aren't great. Jack is a career back up, but more times than not when he was out there he was attacking the defense, and he was scoring the ball.

There were several games that the Nets won last season because of Jack stepping up. People just look at stats and use that to discredit Jack but never mention what happened in games when Jack had to hit big shot after big shot to keep the nets afloat while D-Will was out there quitting on the **** team and Joe was invisible

I'm sorry, but the guys I've seen on here and other places who like to dump on Jack are flat out dishonest about what took place last year.

Statistics and advanced metrics can easily be used to skew or distort what really happened, but they damn sure don't tell who gave a **** about this team when the game was on the line and who damn sure didn't

Context also matters as well. Jack's role was to be a scorer off the bench. He's now expected to be a full time starter. I don't think you can totally look at last season and compare that to this season.

he didnt even bother to try to set up anyone to pass though to score on second unit, he played too selfish, i thought he hurt the team by doing that , plus his defense needs to be more tougher
