There goes the lefty masher to platoon with Revere, well we still have Collabelo, but bit surprised.

Carerra was obviously on the way out, he put up a good fight last night though.

DFA'ing Valencia is absurdly stupid.

Disappointing. I prefer Valencia to Colabello just for the defensive flexibility. Watch an AL east team pick him up and have him destroy Price and Buehrle.

Awful.

We're covered in the infield with Valencia backing up 2nd&3rd and Goins backing up short until Travis comes back. No reason to surrender a key bat against lefties and a key bat off the bench jut to bring up Muni. What a waste.

Not so ninja.

That move makes no sense at all. Valencia can play 3 infield positions (3B, 1B, and in an emergency 2B), mashes lefties, is inexpensive, and has two years of control after this season. Colabello is a back-up DH with numbers that have already started to normalize (it's only going to get worse) and can't play any position without hurting the team and/or embarrassing himself.

This might have been financially motivated, but DV makes a pretty insignificant amount. Awful move. You don't keep a below replacement level player who can't play the field over a versatile utility player who is much better all around.

So many things they could have done that would be better than DFA'ing Valencia.

Using him instead of Kawasaki in the infield.
Not having an 8 man bullpen.
DFA'ing Colabello who is way more likely to regress.

It probably came down to Colabello being good friends with Donaldson. I hope not, but what else could it be? Valencia makes so much more sense than Colabello.

Very surprised about Valencia. I think price even knows him. Unless he actually hates the dude. Valencia has always been an underrated pick up. He covers alot of deficiencies

Problem is, he's not a plus defender anywhere, and almost anyone at Buffalo who plays those positions - Kawasaki, Pompey, Matt Hague - can replace his D in the event of injuries. So if he's not playing except as a pinch hitter and pinch runner, he's basically a towel-waver, he doesn't have the same value. Not sold on the need for a eight man bullpen, but it's a tossup. I think fans also have to think a bit differently. The Jays are going all in, and all moves have to fit that concept.

We wouldn't be keeping him for his defence. We'd keep him (and play him) for his bat. He's only on rare infield-duty as a backup anyway, but he DOES offer versatility. And he's essential in our lineup vs. lefties. Not just for what he does, but for the protection he gives Martin or whoever else they might bat infront of him.
Not to mention the terrible asset managment in all of this. We gave up 2 prospects to get Revere. You might as well add Valencia to that package from our perspective. He's part of the cost of that deal. And not again to mention that we had to trade assets to acquire him last year, while this year we found a way to give him up for nothing.

Keep Valencia to platoon with Smoak at 1B, and option Colabello to the minors or outright let him go.

If it was between Valencia and Colabello, any sane organization would have kept Valencia. This move is baffling. Even worse is he is a fit for the Yankees (which even the homer Wilner pointed out). Surely, Valencia would be useful for them if they have to face Price and Buehrle in a series.

I don't understand the move at all. Smoak should be the one designated along with Carerra.

That Colabello had a remaining option makes it all the more baffling that Valencia was the one let go.

ya, i would have preferred valencia over colabello. colabello better in offense, but the team has plenty of bats, we need defense and flexibility. colabello is the worst defensive player on the team

further does not make sense if revere wants to play LF everyday. there's no where to put Colabello but 1B/DH. EE and Smoak are better players than colabello.

oh well, i guess it's great that the jays are in a good situation that you have to dfa borderline players for everyday players. when travis is back, this team is set

Tulo SS
Donaldson 3B
Bautista RF
Encarnacion DH
Smoak 1B
Martin C
Revere LF
Pillar CF
Travis 2B

bench: Colabello, Goins, Navarro

Playoffs, game 7, on the line in the 9th inning, and you have to go the bench for a righty bat. You gonna choose Valencia or Colabello?

Why should it be between Colabello and Valencia? Smoak bat looks like something out of a matrix movie. I like Colabello. I like Valencia. Keep both of them.

Smoak isn't even hitting RHP. He has something like a .726 OPS against them this year.
