Apparently the field is not holding up well. At all.

Yeah, the issues with the stadium are frustrating. Bad grass, sunny side is a sauna, no real sound retention. You'd hope they would have accounted for some of these things when designing the place. The grass is a major issue. They've got to get that fixed ASAP.

Like the Kaep to Smith connection developing.....really intrigued by the Alabama rookie White. I was expecting nothing good from Pears (hate that signing). Ward's foot and Reid's head scare me to death at the safety position.

I completely agree with everything you said. I am very concerned about that right side of the OL. I think Martin will be fine eventually at the RG spot, but I am concerned about RT. Hopefully Trent Brown emerges, there's still time....And don't forget that Nick Moody looked good at that ILB spot next to Bowman. It would be super sweet if he emerged.

Re: First practice
Play-clock watching: The 49ers are placing a major emphasis on breaking the huddle with at least 22 seconds on the play clock. Other than a couple of times when there were 17 seconds left, Tomsula was pleased with the tempo. “Every day we’re hitting a number we want to hit,” he said. “If the first digit is a ‘1’, we’re not looking for that.”
Thank god!!!!!
Thank god!!!!!

Re: First practice
This struck me:
During the offense-only sessions, the 49ers were working extensively on screen passes, more so than in the drills when the defense was on the field. The focus appears to be the execution of the offensive line, who have to rely on timing and finding their blocking lines to execute the play properly.
Wait, wait. You mean to tell me that OL are supposed to do something other than just charging downfield at the snap on a screen play? You are blowing my mind.
I'm very curious to see what happens with McCoy in Buffalo. He's such a weapon in the passing game. Will Roman actually capitalize on that? Or just continue to throw in the occasional, ineffective screen pass?

Reports on the OL are concerning. Sounds like Martin and Pears had a rough night....

Martin is understandable as he's really young so he still has growing pains to go through and he'll have ups and downs but Pears isn't going to get any better hopefully someone will rip the job from him.
Maybe they'll eventually do it but I just don't see why they don't put Boone at RT and have Thomas and Martin at the OG spots.
Or at least put Brown in there. If we're going to have someone struggle at RT I would rather throw the young guy in there and let him take his lumps and get game experience rather than put the aging vet whose already smashed his head against his ceiling and is only trending downwards.

Re: First practice
Dockett to play primarily in nickel:
http://www.csnbayarea.com/49ers/49ers-notes-darnell-dockett-part-nickel-plan-etc
Very smart by the FO/coaching staff. Dockett was a good pass rusher in 2013, but he struggled playing the run. Having Dorsey play on base downs, and Dockett on passing downs, should be a pretty solid combination.

From what I've read, screen plays require a lot of practice to execute them well. Roman wouldn't commit to it. The occasional screen play didn't work. I read that link about the oline. I am concerned about the right side also. I have yet to find a 49er fan who thought Pears was a good signing.

Very interesting the Saban said White was the best gunner they had. If he can excel at STs, in addition to what he's doing as s receiver, he'd have a great chance of making the team, and the active roster. Patton could be in real trouble...
