His Marlins team followed a pretty similar strategy...they went nuts in free agency, signing Kevin Brown, Al Leiter, Alex Fernandez, Bobby Bonilla, Moises Alou, Devon White and others. Those moves vaulted them into the top five in the league in payroll, something that was entirely unsustainable given their revenues. It was a strategy designed for a very short peak, and to their credit, they won the Series in that one year.
