whatever.
we had our chances in that game.

Man, Jim Johnson sucked today. I didn't like his body language or attitude. He loaded up the bases with nobody out in the 9th and the team bailed him out only to see him load up the bases again without any outs in the 10th before losing the game on a fly ball. Dude also made a sad excuse for effort on a bunt on the 3B side. If he keeps going on like this in this kind of funk, I don't want this a-hole back after this season or even this upcoming postseason.

Jim did his job. he is a one inning relief, and he did just that. but as usual, the fault lies with Don.

remember when we had Nicasio with Michael Moore batting? then Don brings in a lefty Avilan and boom, Clint Hurdle summons Cerveli who is the best hitter on that team who just absolutely kills lefties? Donny tennisball is a disgrace of baseball intellect. he got lucky when Avilan got away with that inning, but sending Jim back out there for another inning, that is priceless... and typical of Donny killlervollyball.

we watch the same game?

Nicasio walked a batter in the 8th inning and then Donnie sent for Avilan and Avilan loaded the bags up…we got out of it with some good defense.

JJ pitched a clean 9th, then Donnie Potato sent him out again in the 10th. He had done his job…the exact one we needed done from him when we traded for him…well, he walked one in the 9th but he got a double play ball so he only saw 3 batters.

I thought the ump was squeezing us all night any way. Easily missed Kershaw ringing up McCutcheon low IN THE ZONE…forced Kershaw to walk him…the 4th inning went into the **** after that.

I guess not. I was preoccupied doing something else while watching the game so my attention was divided. I looked at the 8th when the bases were loaded--and now that you mention it--I do remember the double play to end the 9th, so I apparently glossed over the 9th inning in my recall of the game. My apologies and thank you for jogging my memory into place.

I also remember Grandal being steamed at the ump during one of his at-bats, so I guess the same might have applied to Johnson with regard to the strike zone. Even still, I didn't like the way he handled that bunt on the 3B side. Glad to know now that he did a good job in the 9th.

stacking up righties against Liriano today. We'll see how it goes. This series is important to me. We're both in the pennant race, we could see them in the playoffs and we're trying to keep the Giants off our ass.

I do have a question though…not sure if I asked you guys before.
Do you guys think Kershaw needs to develop another pitch? A consistent change-up that he can actually trust (or any other pitch)?

what a throw by Puig!!!!!

there are maybe a handful of RFers who can make that throw and get the runner out on second... Puig, with all his so called "issues", is surely one of the best talent in ages. just gotta harness that raw talent and energy and turn the freak of nature into a force of nature.

considering his career average of about 8 SO per 9, I expect him to turn this thing around, as Jim Johnson should too to settle in.

He's not there yet Ranma….but I'm liking Puig's at bats man.

he's been a little unlucky but he's not just hacking at the 1st pitch. He's taking these guys deeper into counts.
I think he's gonna turn it around here soon.

well lucks even out. Mat Latos got lucky in his first start as a dodger, striking out only one and yet lasting through 6 innings with only one runs earned. he wasn't so lucky today. Alex Woods pitched a gem and still ended up giving up a ton of runs when the relief gave up a grand slam. I can see Alex clunking away and still come away with a W tomorrow.

The losses hurt but they aren't quite debilitating yet.

Things look like they went back to normal for our pen today. They didn't give up anything after Latos.

I saw our pen's HR/ FB rate was way above league average in the 2nd half….so I dunno if that number will automatically regress or if they're just getting squared up too easily and their HR rate will continue to be above the mean.

The numbers I was looking at were posted on another forum a couple days ago.
Dodger Bullpen in the 2nd half:
FIP - 5.18
xFIP - 3.87
HR/FB - 19%
K/9 - 10.22
BABIP .362
K% 24.8%
BB% 8.4%
Hard Hit % 28.4 (7)
Medium hit % 53.9% (7)
FB % 41.1%

xFIP varying a great deal from the FIP gives me hope.
the K rate gives me hope as well.

Just Like Raul Mondesi

I agree that Yasiel is one of the most naturally talented players in the sport. I love that line you said about turning this "freak of nature into a force of nature". Spot on. If we can forge his natural abilities into a dependable lethal weapon for us, the Dodgers can truly be a deadly team with our pitching and incoming young players who will soon infuse the roster with more talent.

His cannon of an arm reminds me of Raul Mondesi's. I wonder who had the better arm in right field. I'd probably lean towards Yasiel for both strength and particularly accuracy.

That's great to hear. I missed the game entirely as I was at the OC Fair with my friend and his kids. If Puig can remain patient with the process and open to the feedback from both McGwire and Mattingly, he'll be on his way to regaining his prowess at the plate.

Apparently, his bat-flipping could also use some work.

Change-up for Clayton

You know what? I've been wanting Clayton to add a change-up to his arsenal for some time now. Well, I guess "add" is not quite the right word; more like refine his change-up. Before learning the slider, batters were able to lay off his curveball and sit on his fastball because of the wide discrepancy between the speed of the respective pitches. If Kershaw can hone his change-up to the point of having confidence to throw it at any time and more frequently, he can truly be unhittable with those 4 pitches.

the only time Clayton used change up as a legitimate part of his arsenal was in his first two years and even then it was just a "show me" pitch used around 4% of the time. in last two seasons those numbers are now at or below 1%.
I guess what Im trying to say is that yeah it would be phenomenal if Kershaw had Pedro-like change up to go with his world class fastball and breaking stuff, but he is what he is as far as his "stuff" goes. Clay never had a good feel for a change up and I doubt if would suddenly get it now.

damn it while typing this post Kendrick pulled his left hammy. and Carl is looking like a 550 OPS player he is. his noodle arms gave up that triple to Cerveli earlier too.

Still Lacking in Sense

Post#200 » by Ranma » Mon Aug 10, 2015 2:55 am

Geez...Puig comes in as a defensive replacement only to overthrow his cut-off man.

Edit: And now Jim Johnson just gave up 5 earned runs in the 7th inning, which is still going on...make that 6 earned runs with the hook out of the game securing only 2 outs and leaving 2 runners on base.

2nd Edit: The book closes on Johnson with 8 earned runs in .2 inning pitched thanks to Peralta giving up a 3-run HR for a 12-5 deficit. Our bullpen is pathetic.
