Greatest Blazers Ever: Vote for #7

Post#1 » by Moonbeam » Mon Aug 10, 2015 4:36 am

The list so far is here.

Project Guidelines:

Spoiler:
1. Each thread will be open for 48 hours. After 48 hours have passed, the thread will close if a single player receives a majority of the votes. If not, the top 2-3 candidates will enter a runoff period of 24 hours. During this period, you may switch your vote to one of the reduced list of candidates if you voted for someone else.

2. When making a formal vote, please include the player's name in bold. This helps me keep track. Please include a justification for your choice. It may be brief, but simply writing the name of your choice will not be a counted vote.

3. You may switch your vote, but please emphasize this in bold.

4. Please only consider each player's performance with Portland.

5. We all have our favorites, and we all have our own criteria. I believe the discussion and learning from this project will be more important than the placement of the individual players.

6. Have fun!

Runoff Guidelines:

Spoiler:
If at the end of 48 hours, no single player has more than 50% of the votes cast, the top 2* candidates will enter a runoff vote.

1. Original votes for one of these 2 players still count.

2. Those who voted for one of the candidates outside of the top 2 must cast a vote for one of the top 2 candidates for their votes to count.

3. Those who did not vote in the first 48 hours are still welcome to vote in the runoff.

4. Anyone is welcome to change his/her vote if swayed by the arguments of others.

* If there is a tie, more than 2 candidates may enter the runoff. In this case, please list your preferred order among all of the candidates, and a point system will determine the victor. The points will be allocated as follows (using a 3-player runoff as an example): 3 points for 1st place, 2 points for 2nd place, 1 point for 3rd place. If votes don't make a preference beyond #1, the remaining candidates will get the average points for the other ranks. If at the end of this process, there is a tie, the winner will be the player with the most preferences in a 1 on 1 comparison.

Rasheed, Sabas, and Buck Williams have gotten votes recently. Will anyone else join them?

Rasheed Wallace As I've stated before the best player on a title contending team. Good defender, scorer and passer. Great team player

Ok so my initial vote was Sheed but I'm changing it to Scottie Pippen. Pip was more of a leader on the late 90's Blazers teams that made the deep runs and while I have nothing but respect for what Sheed brought to the table leadership is huge in the post season and so Pip it is. This vote was extremely close for me, Sheed was a phenomenal player for the Blazers and this vote was 49.9 percent Sheed 50.1 percent Pip

I always had a hate/love relationship with Rasheed Wallace, but as others have stated, he was incredibly effective in the playoffs. He gets my vote here.

I will vote for Sheed here as well. Best player on the Blazers second best extended run as a contender (although only two playoff runs with that team is a shame).

Personally I have a hard time with Pippen so high. Arguably he was the leader of the 2000 group, maybe the best non-championship team the Blazers have assembled. In that era the Blazers made two playoff runs (99, 00) and Pippen was not part of the first one. He played four years in Portland, and he was clearly a shell of his former self as his Blazer run went on. In his final three playoff runs they were swept in the first round twice, and then he played a small role of the bench in the near comeback against Dallas.

My vote goes to Sabonis

I'm not sure why this guy is not getting more love from this group. The guy did so much for this team ... score, pass, rebound and just created a big log jam on defense. The court vision a guy his size had compared to no other center and this was on the downside of his career. If he'd have come over in 1986 when the Blazers drafted him, we would not even be talking about him at #7 because he would have been the clear #1. The team was in the playoffs every year he was in the league and he had a lot to do with that. He didn't carry the team, but he was a large part of it.

Career Numbers (playoff numbers)
He played in 470 games (51)
He started 314 games (46)
He averaged 24.2 minutes (28.8)
He shot .500 from the field (452)
He shot .328 from 3 point land (319)
He shot .786 from the free throw line (.802)
He averaged 7.3 rebounds (7.4)
He averaged 2.1 assists (1.9)
He averaged 0.8 steals (.9)
He averaged 1.1 blocks (.9)
He averaged 12.0 points (12.1)

I didn't vote for number 6! aaah So LA is number 6, in my opinion he should be 7 and Sheed should be 6 but alas I didn't vote. Actually Sheed should be 5 but ah well.

Thus my vote for number 7 is: Rasheed Wallace really no point in explaining myself Sheed will win this in a landslide anyway.

I call for a revote for number 6! :D

P.S. I had a blazers Pippin jersey when I was in highschool and my sisters punk boyfriend stole it when I was in the navy...... :banghead: he wasn't her boyfriend for too long but long enough to steal my jersey!!!!!!! Anyway as big of a fan of Pippen as I was him over Sheed is ridiculous in my opinion. Pippen was the leader but Sheed was the fire and hands down best player.

Rasheed Wallace because he was the core of/best player on the great late 90s/early 2000s teams.

I'm still going to vote for Sabas for again, Sheed easily is one of the top 5 most hated Blazers
(it would be interesting to take a poll on most hated former Blazers).

Put aside the guys expected to put up numbers and you find winning teams always have the guys
who do all of the little things need done for the team to win. I could argue Aldridge for all of his good
play rarely did what he did in games 1-2 in last years Houston series in his nine years in Portland
and Sheed was implored to be the man in Portland and simply refused.

There are other names that have not been mentioned for Geoff Petrie was Portland's first all-star
and had 5 good years in Portland. Mychal Thompson was a solid player in Portland and everywhere
else he played, Cliff Robinson had 8 good years in Portland in a 18 year career, Jim Paxson also
had 8 solid seasons. The Drexler led teams did not win big prior to the arrival of Buck Williams.

The thing is we've only had 2 really great players in Portland in Bill and Clyde. If Sabas had came
5-6 years earlier when he could run, he'd be our third great player but bad business decisions
cost us the great players who got away in Moses Malone, MJ, Durant.

Vote: Rasheed Wallace

Easy choice. None of the remaining players have his combination of a good peak (top 10 in the league at his best, which was probably the '00-'01 season), consistent prime, and solid longevity (spent seven and a half seasons as a member of the Blazers). Great defender, plus/minus type stats show him in a very favorable light.

He was also a part of one of the best teams in this franchise's history, in 1999-00 (I think he was the best player on that team).

Besides...Ball don't lie. Image

I've been voting for Sheed since #5, and I'll continue to do so here. I think he was better than he gets credit for - statistically he looks like a Top 10 player at his best as Quotatious has said, and he his play held up quite well in the postseason as well.
