Greatest Blazers Ever: Vote for #8 (Sabonis/Lillard/Cliffy runoff)

Post#1 » by Moonbeam » Wed Aug 12, 2015 11:05 am

The list so far is here.

Project Guidelines:

Spoiler:
1. Each thread will be open for 48 hours. After 48 hours have passed, the thread will close if a single player receives a majority of the votes. If not, the top 2-3 candidates will enter a runoff period of 24 hours. During this period, you may switch your vote to one of the reduced list of candidates if you voted for someone else.

2. When making a formal vote, please include the player's name in bold. This helps me keep track. Please include a justification for your choice. It may be brief, but simply writing the name of your choice will not be a counted vote.

3. You may switch your vote, but please emphasize this in bold.

4. Please only consider each player's performance with Portland.

5. We all have our favorites, and we all have our own criteria. I believe the discussion and learning from this project will be more important than the placement of the individual players.

6. Have fun!

Runoff Guidelines:

Spoiler:
If at the end of 48 hours, no single player has more than 50% of the votes cast, the top 2* candidates will enter a runoff vote.

1. Original votes for one of these 2 players still count.

2. Those who voted for one of the candidates outside of the top 2 must cast a vote for one of the top 2 candidates for their votes to count.

3. Those who did not vote in the first 48 hours are still welcome to vote in the runoff.

4. Anyone is welcome to change his/her vote if swayed by the arguments of others.

* If there is a tie, more than 2 candidates may enter the runoff. In this case, please list your preferred order among all of the candidates, and a point system will determine the victor. The points will be allocated as follows (using a 3-player runoff as an example): 3 points for 1st place, 2 points for 2nd place, 1 point for 3rd place. If votes don't make a preference beyond #1, the remaining candidates will get the average points for the other ranks. If at the end of this process, there is a tie, the winner will be the player with the most preferences in a 1 on 1 comparison.

It seems to be wide open again now. Sabonis has had some support for awhile, and Buck Williams, Scottie Pippen, and Rod Strickland have been mentioned as well. Will Lillard make some inroads here? How about Petrie or Wicks?

Damian Lillard's career has been very short thus far but that shot in the playoffs was huge and he's already proven himself to be a leader in key moments. Dame gets my nod here

Have to go for Sabonis. He probably would have been number 1 by a mile had he come in 1987 as Portland would have had a dynasty, but even old Sabonis was an awesome, incredible player in almost every aspect of the game. Well deserved member of the FIBA and Naismith Halls of Fame. And, out of all of the Blazers I ever watched (and I go back to the 76-77 season), he was by far the most fun.

It's just a shame he wasn't on the Blazers in the late 80s. His 80s-era mullet/porn stache combo along with Drexler's mustache would have been awesome together.

Rod Strickland

Sure he had those contract disputes and was therefore seen as a malcontent, but he is an underrated and often overlooked player in the NBA. His career started it's peak in his 4 years in PDX and continued through (and arguably got better) the next 4 years with the Wiz.

14/4/7
17/4.5/9
19/5/9
19/4/10

Is nothing to shake a stick at. Not a PDX game, but I had that 21/12/20 game he had vs. Golden State on video tape. As a guy working on his PG skills at that time, I wore out that tape playing it in slow-mo trying to figure out why Rod was so successful...

Jerome Kersey gets my vote here. He was the energetic x factor on those Drexler led teams, and Kersey often stepped up his production in the playoffs. He played longer than Sabonis, Lillard, Petrie, Wicks, Vandeweghe, or Pippen did in Portland and had more playoff success.

I am going with a guy that combines longevity with playoff success. I can't remember what name he wants to be called these days but to me he's just Uncle Cliffy.

I'll take Arvydas Sabonis here. Considered Lillard. Sabonis has more playoff success, better statistical contributions, and was a very good defender instead of a terrible one.

Sabonis was a bit of a quiet player, but he was a huge factor in winning basketball games. His .200 career WS48 is just absolutely fantastic. I wouldn't hold his lack of all-star appearances against him, given the ridiculously tough competition at center in the 90s.

I'm going to throw in a name not yet mentioned Jim Paxson-2 time NBA all-star, 2nd team all NBA and at one point(since eclipsed) he teams all time leading scorer

I purposely left Lillard (or anyone currently on the roster) out of this voting overall...simply because it's still a work in progress. I actually think Lillard will be a lot higher on this list when it's all said and done.

Cliff was definitely the face of the franchise in 95/96. What a great season that was.

I'm going to vote for Sabas #8. Consideration to Kersey, Petrie, Buck and Lillard. Despite arguably being the greatest "what if" on the franchise with by far the most "what ifs" in the history of the league, Sabonis was the rock that helped keep the Blazers afloat as a playoff team in the tumultuous late 90s and then a contender (in the tumultuous but more successful 99-03 time. Broken down Sabots was the most amazing passing center I have ever seen (I'm too young for Walton), the only guy in the league who could kind of contain Shaq without constant double teaming and a great all around player.

For like the 4th vote in a row now .... Sabonis!!! He was the most skilled big man the Blazers ever had, including Bill Walton.

Cliff Robinson. For me, he had the most impactful career with longevity of everyone left. When you think about the Blazer teams of the early and mid 90s, it's hard not to picture Uncle Cliffy and his headband. Also, if memory serves me right, he has the longest streak of consecutive games played in franchise history. Only regret I have is that we let him go to Phoenix as a free agent... :(

Once again, I'll vote for Sabas. The only player to enter the hall of fame as a Blazer.

of course total win share isn't going to favor Lillard - he has only played 3 seasons. nobody held that against Walton.

Bill however was a dominant player on a championship team, NBA finals MVP 1977 and league MVP
in 1978 and his teams won championships everywhere he went and was named as a top 50 player
of all time.

One can argue however Dame in 2-3 years will be a top 6 player for that shot with .9 seconds left
is one of the franchise highlights. I can make the argument he's top 10 right now for like B-Roy,
he literally has the entire weight of the franchise on his shoulders for NO is crafting the team's
personnel around him.
