Donald Sloan is a nice late signing for the Nets. Help for a backcourt that really needs it

Maybe the best option when it comes down to it?

By RPM, yes. 52nd among PGs last year. That translates as a below-average back-up but that still counts as a big upgrade for the Nets.

But, wait, there's hope for us yet. The year before, albeit in a much smaller sample size, he was second to last among PGs with a sub-Bargnanian -7.75, ahead only of a rookie Dennis Schroder (though RPM also really hates 2nd year Schroder who looked pretty good to me).

Even ignoring RPM, he's a terrible fit for Brooklyn. They desperately need a shooter at PG and Sloan's another dud.

Phil Jackson on new Brooklyn backup C Andrea Bargnani:

Andrea Bargnani, PF/C

"AB was and still is a big tease. When he was injured he refused to do simple non-contact activities like dummy our offense in practice. He seemed to be a malingerer and this had a bad effect on the team, and also on the way the Knicks fans reacted to him. When he was on the court, he had a hard time staying intense, didn't hustle back in offense-to-defense transition, wasn't active enough in defending screen-rolls. Still, his offense is perfectly suited to the triangle because he really doesn't have to work very hard to get shots. He's another guy we renounced, but whether we can agree on financial terms for his return, or he winds up someplace else, AB will always be somewhat of an enigma."

http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/13355566/the-phil-files-part-7-final-evaluations

FYI B. Lopez averaged 29 mpg last year. Most he's averaged in a season in BRK is 31.4 so there is a lot of backup minutes to be had at C.

And they have left themselves with so few Bargnani alternatives. There's T-Rob, who has been garbage so far, and the project rook McCullough rehabbing from an ACL. And Thad is hardly a minutes hog himself.

If Brook tweaks an ankle, they'd be looking at 36+mpg of Bargs.

If LP Broadband has the choice package again this year, BK is going to the top of the list. I can't wait to watch this play out.

Thank the basketball gods for:
a) Billy King's incompetence - Billy has yet to realize that Bargnani is terrible, despite the fact that he's played in the Atlantic Division his whole career, not to mention the fact that he was playing in NYC for the past 2 seasons. Why they signed him? I have no clue.
b) Bargnani's laziness - I'm about 95% sure that Bargnani decided to sign with the Nets, only because he was much too lazy to pack up his things and move to Sacramento. The other 5% just assumes that Bargnani doesn't want to live in Sacramento.

If Billy King manages to keep his job beyond this season, I'd be shocked.

Yeah, it's been said before but I think it is worth repeating this team will be just awful any time it's without Lopez. As in, bottom 1-2 league-wide in production at both the C and PG spot when Lopez isn't playing.

I feel like a pack of vultures circling around a decomposing rabbit out in the desert.

I dont feel bad about it though, being a scavanger has its benefits.

The Nets schedule for the first month looks absolutely brutal!!!! :D

10/28 CHI
10/30 @SAS
10/31 @MEM
11/2 MIL
11/4 @ATL
11/6 LAL
11/7 @MIL
11/11 @HOU
11/13 @SAC
11/14 @GSW
11/17 ATL
11/18 @CHA
11/20 @BOS
11/22 BOS
11/25 @OKC
11/28 @CLE
11/29 @DET

12 road games. 5 back-to-backs, and they don't have any home game stands. Sounds like Silver is trying his best to ensure that the Celtics get a high lottery pick this year.

EDIT: Holy cow! Check out this stretch of games after the All-Star break.

Feb. 23 at Portland
Feb. 25 at Phoenix
Feb. 27 at Utah
Feb. 29 at Los Angeles (LAC)
Mar. 1 at Los Angeles (LAL)
Mar. 4 at Denver
Mar. 5 at Minnesota
Mar. 8 at Toronto
Mar. 11 at Philadelphia

The caliber of teams isn't that high, but being on the road increases the odds of losing I guess.

ummmmm. wow. I say they win against LA, one ATL game, and the Detroit/Charlotte games.

Everything else looks like a big L.

4-13

That should break their backs early and send them into a tailspin through the rest of the year.

They could also just as easily lose all those games and go 0-17.

After Joe Johnson gets dealt at the trade deadline, Nets also have a 9-game, 18-day road trip so good luck with that.

I think Brooklyn actually had a good off-season. They kinda cleaned house & although they'll suck this year (great for us!), they can start fresh next season. I don't think they'll be good & I do believe that we'll get a lotto pick, but I still expect it to be 7th-ish, instead of top 5ish.

& T-Rob isn't garbage. Everytime he gets mins he puts up #'s. With slow Lopez & weak Thad, Trob will come in & just give them seriousssss needed rebounding & energy. He's gonna play a ton. Bargs won't play major mins. We're talking about Hollins here. Barg was just signed for some spot minutes. Trob for MIP!

I'm more focused on Dallas, because idk if there gonna be 7 teams worse than them? I think they're an old brittle team who sucks. I think they'll be bottom 3 in the west. Portland, Minny, Denver - probably worse than Dal. & I'm not even sure of that.

If we can go like Port, Philly, Minny, Denver, Brooklyn, Nyk, some team here*, Dal.

Imagine we got like the 7th & 8th picks? C& win 45 games?! I'd be hypeeeeed.

I was a huge T-Rob fan leading up to his draft. The rebounding, the athleticism, the strength - thought he'd be Ken Faried with better defense and a face-up game. But instead he's been more like Reggie Evans. Mediocre finisher, no skill, weak defender. He's a one-trick pony. There's a reason why 4 teams didn't want him and the 5th got him for the minimum.

Got this comment off of the Celtics subreddit and it also brings up another great point I hadn't even considered.

This is GREAT, the tough schedule ensures they'll do poorly even before Lopez gets injured again

So, who should we take with the #1 overall pick? I really like Ben Simmons. Ben Simmons is my choice ;)

JaVale McGee is a perfect signing for the Mavs.

He's got a 5% chance of working out, but if he does he can replicate Brandan Wright for the Mavs.

If he does that, that pick become much closer to us.

Deron Williams
Wesley Matthews
Parsons
Dirk
JaVale McGee

... That may be able to just sneak into the 7-12 range in the West. Lots of potential to fail (Wesley Matthews injury, Dirk old, McGee and Deron might just suck) put in there with the off shot everything works out and they're this year's Bucks. Great to see Cuban going for it immediately. Have to tear off that band aid at some point, might as well be now with Dirk on the free fall. And getting a return on the pick sooner is better for the Celtics.
