Any chance Price takes a 2yr deal?

Post#1 » by RalphWiggum » Fri Aug 14, 2015 7:00 am

I know shelf life as a pitcher is short but is it possible Price would accept a 2yr 74 million dollar deal with the Jays and insure himself on the back end if he got hurt. I really feel most of his value to us is in the next couple years and we could grossly overpay for a couple years as opposed to comitt to 7 years while we still leave Price the opportunity to sign an even more lucrative 7 year deal later, it's not like he'll be 35? Assuming he pitches similar to his last few years somebody will toss 30 million per his way at 31 and he'll get his 7 years because it's baseball!

No chance at all. You don't leave 150m on the table, ever. It would be a very Ralph Wiggum type of thing to do - excuse the Simpsons reference but OP's handle gave me no choice.

Price will probably have a series of opt outs through his contract but he isn't going to risk losing out on a huge payday if his arm falls off after signing the deal. If Toronto wants a shot to keep him they'll have to be on par with term and money.

He will likely get 7 years (with possibly an opt-out after 3) and a NTC. He is the best SP on the market. No way he doesn't fully maximize his earning potential.

No way. Especially with how volatile a starting pitcher's career is. He's going to ask for 7 years 230 million and a team is going to give it to him.

7 years for sure, the opt out part I'm not sure on...

He will get his cake and I'm on board to give it to him. He's not some fat slob. He takes care of himself and he wants to win. I wouldn't even worry about regression with him for another 5-6 years.
That's what she said.

if all goes well.. why dont we just overpay and see if he goes for it..ala Lebron James.
So give him 3 year 120 million or 2 year 80 + the option.
And for him. he can maximise his potential and at the same time he can still get the big contract in a few years time.

Pitchers break down at a frightening rate. No pitcher is going to try to set themselves up for a big contract at age 32 or 33 when they can get paid $30m+ per year over the remainder of their prime.

Being a 'fat slob' really doesn't play into it all that much...pitching is an unnatural, destructive action, and sooner or later it chews up arms. Justin Verlander isn't a fat slob, but he started to break down in his age 31 season; luckily for him, he had just locked in a long-term deal.

Price signing a two year deal would make him stupider than Oliver Miller.

Much more likely for us to free up some space so that we can go out and sign an ace off the free market. Price is good promotion and a reminder to the league that we are a great destination.
Looking for a new signature. Currently, still evaluating.

What is in it for David Price? Think about that for a second and you'll get your answer to this question.

Let's not all poop on the OP. Price would be willing to sign a two year deal, if it was for $100million over 2 years.

He'd still be leaving $100 million on the table if he did that.

Exactly, you don't leave $100-130 million on the table on this scenario and upwards of $160 million based on the OP's post. What's in it for Price again?

There is an inflection point in which reward outweighs risk. Personally, I think $50 million a year vs. $30 million a year is that point

I'd agree with you if he was 27 or 28 but not at 30. He'd be 32 by the time he got another shot at being a UFA.
