A Thunder fan on the General Board posted this. I had never seen it before, so I thought I'd share it just in case someone here hasn't seen it. The music they chose to accompany the video is amazing.

He's over in China timbering all their forests for the construction of his bed for the Hornets exhibition game over there. Rumor has it that factory blew up yesterday b/c it was trying to manufacture his headboard. The tragedies people must endure so Al gets his beauty sleep.

I'm not sure what's more embarrassing for Rick - the fact he's actually writing something so uninteresting, or the fact he's using it as a teaser.

20 something pounds? That's nothing for an NBA player his size. He'll gain that weight back naturally during the season, due to road trips and such.

16/8/3/1 in 30mpg with passable defense would be about perfect for Al this season.

That would probably get him $18M+ from somewhere next season
investigate Adam Silver

I would be happy with that, assists are probably too high though, im not sure he has ever averaged 3apg.
I still wouldn't want us to resign him, we need to do like Portland did (or is trying to do) and get players whose primes will be close to Kemba/MKG/Batum's primes, so hopefully in 3-4 years we can be at least a high level playoff team.(i doubt we contend with our current core).

He hasn't. His career high is 2.3 I believe. 3 assists is definitely wishful thinking.
Totally agree. I wouldn't even consider resigning him even if he put up 20/10. Maybe if we made the conference finals or something crazy like that.

I think Al's days of getting big contracts are over. I get the salary cap is going up but the game is evolving away from what he does on offense and he's hardly additive on defense. 2011-2012 was the last year he had a significant impact on his team. In 2012-13 Utah was 7 points better when he sat. 2013-14 Charlotte was 3+ points better with him playing but that was for an average team and other guys had a bigger impact. Last year, Charlotte wasn't better or worse when he played. As a comparison, the team was 11 points better when MKG played
He turns 31 this year so I'd increasingly view Al as a specialist while Charlotte and the rest of the league gravitate more to PnR, shooting and paying for defensive wings. I'm not trying to be negative on Al it's just that time and style of play are working against him. Even with a good year, I think his market will be at best $10-12 million/year on a 2 year contract with the second year being team option.

I think the player in this case will look to soften the end of his career with a comfortable spot in Charlotte. $10-12 seems right, considering the market, but not with the second year as at team option, I think. Al will try to get a Hendo-type deal with a smaller base and control over his second year. His agent may even be able to get a third year at team option with a salary-based incentive. Unless Jefferson gets injured, I think that's where he's headed this offseason. That's all predicated, of course, on the Hornets making the playoffs and the front office not suffering a quick and timely death. Miss the playoffs and the whole bunch of 'em, including Al, are gone.
I think Mystical Apples is also right that Al is growing into a specialist, a hired gun. He'll be valuable to a playoff team in 2017 when his contract is set to expire or revert to team control. Good, solid veteran big man help is hard to find. He'll be attractive to somebody.

Contracts aren't allowed to be structured like that. You can't give him a player option in the 2nd year and then a team option in the 3rd year.
Options, whether player or team, can only be set in the final year of a contract, and only one option. So either player option, or team option, not both. Only pre-determined rookie scale contracts are allowed to have more than 1 option year. Al is certainly no rookie.
You can do a pseudo option using non-guaranteed years, but that still restricts the order of choice and control.
So you could have non-guaranteed 2nd and 3rd year with a 3rd year player option. That structure would approximate having a team option 2nd year and a player option 3rd year (since you can cut the player instead of keeping him the 2nd year).
But that wouldn't allow you to create the structure of giving Al control over the 2nd year and team option 3rd year. It would be the reverse, in terms of control, and the opposite of what your suggested contract structure aimed to provide Al in terms of control. Or perhaps I'm misconstruing your intent.

Re: Fat Albatross: The Al Jefferson Thread 2.0
I mentioned 2 years with a team option as the best path for Al to get the highest annual salary on paper. The cap will skyrocket in 2016/17 and 2017/18 but then is projected to level off. Some teams may need to get to the salary minimum for those years but won't want to be on the hook in 2018/19 when all turns 34. I think without a team option his annual salary will be closer to 8-10 over a 2-3 year contract.
