LeBron James will spend $41M to send 1100 kids to college

http://www.foxsports.com/nba/story/lebron-james-college-scholarships-akron-university-cavaliers-i-promise-081315

The NBA star has partnered with the University of Akron to provide a guaranteed four-year scholarship to the school for students in James' "I Promise" program who qualify. The scholarship will cover tuition and the university's general service fee -- currently $9,500 per year. James told ESPN he plans to provide this for 1,100 kids, which would cost his foundation a total of $41.8 million at the school's current rates.
It's the latest example of James, who often refers to himself "as just a kid from Akron" giving back to a community that helped raise him.
"It's the reason I do what I do," said James, who announced the program Thursday while hosting an event for students at Cedar Point Amusement Park. "These students have big dreams, and I'm happy to do everything I can to help them get there. They're going to have to earn it, but I'm excited to see what these kids can accomplish knowing that college is in their futures."

I have never been one of his biggest fans, but he won me over on this, a lot. Talent, super star teams, Lebron the GM, screw that. Ultimate respect to that guy!

Good stuff
Go lebron!!!

I wonder how they will be handed out?
By grades?
Test scores?
Zip code?
USA Celtics in full effect. Amazing chemistry building experience right there for the main core of the team

I have never been a Lebron fan. His antics usually bother me, this however is a very grand gesture and gives me a little insight into who he actually is as a person. Much respect, this is a truly admirable thing to do.

This is flat out awesome. Round of applause for James.
"I definitely knew he traveled, but I didn't know they were going to call it. That was one of them situations in which a great player made a move...and they called the call. And I was like, 'Oh, man, there is a God.'

Yeah, man LeBron has already screwed a lot of people over by changing teams .

Leave it to you to somehow downplay sending 1100 kids to college.

even if so its still a grand act.. and tax write off doesnt mean you get it all back it would just reduce his overall taxable income by said amount which would still result in the same tax bracket..

If it was a simple as Donating and then writing it off and getting it all back everyone would do it to said they did something.

THis is a noble act whether you like him or not (I HATE HIM) give ppl credit when its due.

This reminds me of an experiment done in the 80s for kids in Philadelphia.

I shared this news on my Facebook page 4 hours. By then I thought it was old news until I got here and saw it was only 44 minutes old when I opened the thread.

But yeah, it's hard to hate on LeBron when such a generous donation. You gotta have a good heart in there somewhere to do such a kind thing.
