Just edited my post above: Cuarón and Del Toro are not the same director ;)

I'm 5.5 episodes into power watching "Mr Robot". The good news is that for me to power watch anything, it means I'm interested. However, I'm really ho-hum on the show. I want to love it. I don't dislike it. I guess I'm just disgusted that I don't share the same enthusiasm as both everyone I've spoken to and everyone on this board. Maybe expectations were set too high :dontknow:

"Pan's Labryinth" was fantastic. Another great movie by Del Toro was "The Devil's Backbone".

That's too bad. Maybe it was the hype factor or perhaps it's just a take it or leave it show. Definitely my favorite show that's not Rick and Morty.

I don't think anyone here would question your taste at this point though, haha. Lots of good recs and a ton of stuff we have in common.

Not sure how many here play videogames, but I was eagerly anticipating Del Toro and Hideo Kojima's (Metal Gear series) collaboration on the new Silent Hill game (Silent Hills).

After Kojima's fallout with Konami (**** Konami), Del Toro actually said he's never getting involved in videogames again, lol.

I guess he considers himself bad luck. A real shame, his general vision is perfect for horror games.

Haha. Thanks Truth. I'm actually through 7 episodes. Back half of 6 and all of 7 were fantastic. Now for the episode everyone has been talking about. I'll watch it tomorrow morning and let you know. Definitely because of the hype.

"Mr Robot" episode 8...

Seeing that I watched all 8 episodes in just about 2 days, would it be bad to go back and do it all over again to see if there were any tells during those episodes? Lol

In my opinion, how the reveal (or reveals) plays/play out will determine how I really feel about the show. Regardless, I can't remember the last time a TV show gave me that "Fight Club"...What just happened moment...There's always been shocking deaths in television, but not a huge twist like that..."Lost" is the closest thing...

This all got me thinking about movies with crazy reveals. The only criteria that I used was that I had to love the movie. Not going to list something just because it was a twist. Here are mine:

1.-"Fight Club"
2.-"Usual Suspect"
3.-"Se7en"
4.-"Memento"...Early Nolan...I long for those years
5.-"The Game"...So underrated
6.-"Primal Fear"...Norton was so good here
7.-"The Machinist"... :o
8.-"Frailty"...This is a gem not many have seen
9.-"The Mist"...Guilty pleasure. I really enjoyed this movie
10.-"Jacob's Ladder"
11.-"Angel Heart"...Still think of Deniro peeling hard boiled eggs with those crazy finger nails
12.-"The Vanishing"...Both the original and the remake. Normally, I hate American remakes, but Bridges and Sutherland were outstanding
13.-"Oldboy"...NOT THE REMAKE. This original remains my favorite "non horror" international movie of all time and the ending is a punch to the face.
14.-"Gone Baby Gone"...Believe it or not, this movie probably makes my top 20 all time. Casey was great here
15.-"12 Monkeys"
16.-"Don't Look Now"
17.-"Arlington Road"...Again...love me some Dude
18.-"Jacob's Ladder"
19.-"Session 9"...One of the scariest movies I've ever seen in my life. Still scares me and I don't fright easily.

There's some obvious omissions that aren't on here because I really wasn't a fan of the film or thought the reveal was lazy. Any additions from anyone?

I really liked "The Others" and "The Village" as far as I didn't see that coming. Great list by the way. "Primal Fear" was awesome."Jacob's Ladder" was messed up.

SPOILER ALERT-

If his dad is in his imagination, I'm done. If it's some fake death/anti aging or cloning, I'm in. I just really want Slater to be real. The details...I'm open to. His sister hit me like a bat to the face. Lol. I always wondered about MR, but not her. Nuts.

I've only seen 9 of those movies, including "Frailty" (I thought it was just OK), "Angel Heart" (excellent, saw it for the second time just a couple months ago), "The Vanishing" (both versions, enjoyed the original more), "12 Monkeys" (I'm a Terry Gilliam/Monty Python fan), etcetera.

Have just added "Oldboy", "Don't Look Now", "Jacob's Ladder" and (even if it only has a 2-star rating) "Session 9" on Netflix.

I loved "The Others" and would recommend it to anybody.

Can't think of any "twisty" movies at the moment. Sunday morning, sorry.

Total forgot "The Others". Great movie. Kind of saw it coming a bit because it was on the heels of "The Sixth Sense". Still great. As for "The Village", I didn't see that from a mile away. However, I was not a fan. I think I disliked it because the twist was impossible to see coming. I like movies where if you re-watch, you say...why the hell could I have not figured that out. With "The Village", I just don't think it was possible.

"Jacob's Ladder" is brilliant and mentioned twice on here for dramatic effect. Lol!

Super D-I've never had anyone dislike "Session 9". Rec'ed it to a lot of people. Hope you aren't disappointed. "Don't Look Now" will be dated but worth a look. Make sure "Oldboy" is the Korean version. :D

Both versions of "Oldboy" were listed, so I saved the original one :) I'm dog-sitting today, and it's going to be crazy hot outside around here, so I may end up seeing one or two of these movies this afternoon...

Same. Insane heat in Philly. Will probably clean the house, eat some lunch, get extremely baked and take in a few movies off that list.

I gotta hit you guys back with some music or books. I'm really not a movie/tv guy at all and I've been turned onto some gems here.

Btw, I love the original 12 Monkeys, and the sci-fi TV series is actually really good. Sci fi has been pretty weak post Battlestar, but 12 Monkeys, Helix, Killjoys, and Dark Matter (probably the best of all of them) are great pop-Sci fi. Dont go in expecting anything and you will be thoroughly entertained.

BTW, speaking of a team moving to Seattle (from the other thread), just read this New Yorker piece from a month back on the inevitable massive earthquake in the pacific northwest. Really compelling, from the 'truth is scarier than fiction' category.

"Fear the Walking Dead" DVR reminder.

Also looking forward to the "Blunt Talk" premiere with Patrick Stewart. Love me some Charles Xavier and Jean-Luc Picard.

Haven't watched much. "Power" finale was incredible. "Ray Donavan" remains awesome. Didn't catch any flicks this past week. Really want to see "Straight Outta Compton" but at 3 hours during the Summer, I'm thinking straight to dvd.

There's some obvious omissions that aren't on here because I really wasn't a fan of the film or thought the reveal was lazy. Any additions from anyone?

Great list. In the last 2 months, I've actually rewatched Usual Suspects, Se7en and Primal Fear (not as big on this one as you. Generally not a fan of lawyer-centric movies). Was never big on Memento but it may be time to give it another chance (been like a decade) as pretty much everyone else loves it. Totally with you on Frailty and ESPECIALLY The Mist--- for whatever reason, I've always liked movies that can take place in a small, almost claustrophobic setting and actually pull it off.

Only two movies I've demanded my sister watch in the past year were The Mist and The Raid--- she was sold on both. Never saw the remakes of Oldboy and The Vanishing and don't intend to and on a related note, they're remaking The Raid, so I'd advise everyone to check out the original before they butcher it and compromise your view on the movie. Don't Look Now is the only one I haven't checked out yet, gonna have to hunt it down at some point.

Having some trouble coming up with additions at the moment, but some are sure to trickle out over time. Right off the dome tho, I'd add:

 • "The Unknown Women" - Italian thriller. Does a great job of stringing you along with lil nugs throughout the movie without revealing too much at once. Not 100% sure if it qualifies for this list, but whatever.
 • "Enemy" - Split opinions on this. I enjoyed it but I get why someone wouldn't.
 • "The Sixth Sense" - Boring addition to the list, but an essential one. Great movie the 1st go around, but like Usual Suspects.. soooo much of the movie is the reveal, which kills the rewatchability factor.

Semi-honorable mentions (<perfect movies I enjoyed, but wouldn't actively pimp out):
 • "The Hidden Face" - Spanish. Not great, but a pretty good popcorn horror/thriller flick. Again, I liked it, but not enough to project that others would.
 • "Pontypool" - Entirely takes place in a radio station, so it reeled me in with my claustrophobic setting fetish I mentioned earlier. Unsatisfying ending tho. Main Character played Eddie Shore in the Don Cherry made-for-TV miniseries, so Bonus Points for any association with the Bruins.
 • "A Serbian Film" --- Unforgettable ending, but the most disturbing/unsettling movie I've ever seen. Would legitimately advise everyone NOT to watch it. Being 100% serious, avoid it--- somethings you can't ever forget and this movie has a few of them. There's an English language ripoff of this movie that keeps most of the core story in place, without the EXTREMELY F'd up scenes of A Serbian Film. Gonna put it in spoilers below:

Spoiler:
"Kill List"

15th. I don't know where to begin. If this was a movie forum, you would be my go to poster (you're not bad at Celts either though...haha)

I haven't seen "The Unknown Woman" or "The Hidden Face". I'll be checking them out. I've seen the rest. I enjoyed "Pontypool" and LOVED "Kill List". You need to check out "Memento" again. My wife and I were dating at the time and she literally needed to leave 30 minutes early to puke because her brain hurt so bad.

"Enemy" is awesome. I can see why people hate on it. But it's fantastic. Not as good as the Jake and Villanueva "Prisoners", but still great.

That brings me to the ultimate reason for responding to your post. I really don't know what to say. What in the hell possessed you to watch "A Serbian Film"? I actually had to buy that DVD 6 years ago off of Amazon UK. My buddy and I were all set to watch it and my DVD player didn't play the DVD. I had to go to Best Buy and pick up a special DVD player for $250. We then watched it and it's still, to this day, the only movie I've seen where I've had to step out of the room (the baby). I had just had my daughter and it hit too close to home.

I'm shocked that you've seen this flick man. Lol. You never do me dirty.

Went to Afropunk Festival this weekend, amazing experience. I've been to a few other festivals, but the energy and quality of people/performers at this one was sublime. Everyone was just full of love, acceptance and happiness. People just dancing, getting high, getting laid, doing w/e, it really felt free. And the cops did not give one **** about everything that was going down lol.

Anyway, I could go on for a lot longer about how great the vibes and general culture were, but I really just wanted to list some of the fantastic artists I saw. Legends in bold. People you guys should check out are italicized and underlined.

RAAA (idk, they were ok, just party music, nothing special really)

Lionbabe (pretty cool, vocalist was fine as ****, but not great at singing, synth player/sampler was ill though, Marky Ramone came out randomly and played a bunch of Ramones songs with them, I think he's the last living Ramone)

Spoiler:

Candiria (not really my kind of thing, alt thrash kind of sound)

Spoiler:

SZA (really impressed me, I had never heard of her before, beautiful woman, and great songs to dance to, sick lyrics too, she made a Mortal Kombat metaphor at one point, haha. Will definitely grab some of her music soon)

Spoiler:

Kelis (another ill set, lots of funk covers of her old hits and she did a 90s medley with some cool throwbacks in the middle of the set, she was pregnant too and killed it, super impressive, when Milkshake came on the crowd lost it)

Spoiler:

Suicidal Tendencies (I don't like hardcore/punk music, but they are such legends I forced myself to watch the set, and WOW, so glad I did. These dudes are genius level musicians who had incredible chemistry, all the songs blew my mind from a technical perspective. The drummer and bassist were particularly ridiculous. Lead singer was a really cool guy, he said a lot of great stuff about all the recent shootings and police violence against young black men, and other solid stuff about freeing your mind from society, etc. I really appreciated everything he said. I may even buy one of their albums.)

Oshun (Holy ****. Such a talented band. Amazing psychedellic neo-R&B. The two vocalists were ethereal, and their bassist may have been the best of the whole festival, I highly recommend you guys check them out. Also going to grab one of their albums soon)

Spoiler:

Danny Brown (The best possible dumb music. This guy just knows how to get a crowd going. Nothing particularly next level here, but entertaining as ****, everyone in the crowd was burning at one point lol, plumes of smoke. Danced up on some fine women in this set, only time in the festival I almost go some lmao)

Spoiler:

Ms. Lauryn Hill LAURYN **** HILL (What do I need to say really? One of the best performances I have ever seen, and I've been to many, many amazing shows. Her back up band destroyed it, back up vocals, drums and guitar were just mixed incredibly and the musicians were so **** good. She was rocking a white leather blazer and acoustic and just laying down DOPE bars on top of her regular vocals. I mean **** DOPE, man, probably the best flow I have ever heard live. I was coming up pretty hard on molly at this point in the show, and then halfway through the set, the sound controller people cut her off [she started a bit late, but there were no sets on that stage in between her and Grace Jones, they could have let her play the second half of her set]. Super lame, she started to scream at someone off stage, and then told the band to keep playing, but no one could hear. They played acoustic for a while and then she just left the stage looking pissed as hell. Wish she could have finished, but was still amazing. Definitely going to catch her in Philly or Boston on her next tour. Must see stuff.)

Spoiler:

Death Grips (Crazy **** band. Just wild stuff. Psychedelic industrial grime drug hip hop is the best way I could describe it. The two members are pretty legendary musicians in the underground scene, heard them on several other projects. If you like weird music, check them out for sure, I plan to.)

Spoiler:

Grace Jones (Again, one of the best live performances I have ever seen. She came on stage naked, wearing nothing but a silver blazer and tribal white body paint and a silver, glimmering alien-panther head with red glowing jewel eyes and demon teeth. First song was her cover of "Night Clubbing" [great cover, great original song by Iggy/Bowie off "The Idiot", one of my favorite albums, and novels] and then it just went into some wild Caribbean medley stuff, with dark demonic beats and hypnotic bass lines lacing everything. She covered "Love is the Drug" by Roxy music and actually made it an amazing song. Between every song she changed into a different outfit, each more psychedelic than the next. At one point she was just naked, wearing a diamond encrusted top hat, while waves of strobe light obscured her into the stage. Crazy stuff. I knew she would be good, but I didn't expect to hear one of the best sets of my life. She was so **** too, lol, smoking joints the whole set and pretending to fall over a bunch of times lmao. And she's **** 70. Inspirational stuff. Dolph Lundgren knew what was up.

Thundercat (Again, not sure what really needs to be said. The best bassist of our generation, an absolute genius/living god. Completely mind blowing set. Going to assume most people here know about him, but if you don't, stop **** up and go youtube his stuff immediately. Especially if you are a funk/jazz/life/joy/music fan.

Spoiler:

Gary Clark Jr. (I actually own a few records of his, but I remember thinking they weren't that great, his performance was so solid though that I may need to go back and listen to them again. Incredible blues guitarist. Really good set to just groove to.)

Spoiler:

We left after Gary Clark. I Had to get home as I had no cat sitter. So I didn't get to see Lenny Kravitz perform. Doubt I missed much though, he's not really that great a musician/his songs kind of suck lol. Would have stayed if I had a sitter, but w/e. The whole weekend was just surreal. I can't believe I saw so many legends, haha. I will def be there next year if the lineup is even half as good.
