As a Dortmund fan, that's worrisome.

I suppose but it's not just that, he's so uncoordinated and gangly. It's the Peter Crouch effect. He's also a walking foul.

This game didn't deserve a winner. Will be very tough for Leverkusen next week, but far from impossible.

Actually, it is.
They should've scored at least one and conceeded a dumb goal.
0-1 is also a tough result cause one slip defensively and you've got to score three to qualify for the CL.

True. Plus I get the feeling from him that, like Crouch, he knows how lucky he is that football is a thing and that he's sorta useful at it. With Crouch, it was hard not to like a guy with the self-awareness to answer the question "what would you be if not a footballer?" with "a virgin." And Fellaini gives off Crouch vibes on and off the pitch.

While in general there is truth to this. Bayer have already been playing competitive matches, with the first round of the domestic cup and first matchday of the BuLi already behind them; whereas before this match Lazio only had the Supercoppa. So Leverkusen had an advantage in preparation that will be lessened in the second leg and it would come as no shock to me if that has a greater effect than the homefield advantage Leverkusen will gain/Lazio will lose. So it seems quite plausible that in the next leg we'll see Lazio do a lot better at keeping Bayer away from the glorious openings they squandered today, while being sharper and more lethal with their own chances...Unless Lazio is just crap on the road and rely on their home form to carry them; which I don't know if is true of this group.

Yeah. This was a good game for him and showed off all of the talents he has that make me bother with being annoyed by leverkusen's failure to properly utilize him; but this match once again reinforced my opinion that the kid would be so much more effective and impactful playing behind Kramer-Bender in a Pirlo-esque role rather than in front of them as the 10. I get the concerns about him being the deepest midfielder defensively, but he puts the work in against the ball, so should grow into that aspect of the position. Plus both Lars and Kramer are excellent at pressing up the pitch as well as racing back to defend deeper if the first pressing-zone fails to return the ball to their possession.

Which should help Hakan on that end more than enough for it to be worth it for how much more he could control the play with the extra space and time on the ball to pick out his stunning long passes. While giving him room to run forward and drive the action himself if nothing more imminent is there for him...Kramer in particular is brilliant at running alongside creatives and playing quick 1-2s with them on the fly that just knife through a defense still racing back into shape. Lars is more of a do-it-himself option for Hakan to just play it off to when the gaps are there for him to run at if there's no direct option and it's cramped for him and Kramer to combine their way through.

If Leverkusen made that transition with Calhanoglu I could really see him blossoming into a serious star who you fear every time he touches the ball, even when it isn't a set piece. Hopefully Schmidt figures it out if Leverkusen don't get eliminated by those fascists in the second leg. But if they do, then I'm ok with him continuing to hold the talent on that team back. Bayer may not a trully repellent team like Lazio or BFC, but they are one that there is no reason to enjoy/cheer-for beyond those talents that Schmidt is misusing.

If we ignore all of those times were our teams have won, this would even be true.
